HPU’s Jack Sides Named Big South Men’s Golfer of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Sophomore Jack Sides of the High Point University men’s golf team was named Big South Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday.

The New Bern, N.C. native earned the honor after winning the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate in Leland, N.C. by firing a -2 for the three-round tournament. Sides opened the contest on Sunday, March 15 with a -3 (69) to grab a lead he would never relinquish. He followed that up with an even (72) on the second 18 holes of the day.

On Monday, he carded a +1 (73), but was able to maintain a five-stroke lead and earn medalist honors finishing the tournament with an overall score of 214. Four players tied for second with a score of 219. He led HPU’s efforts as the Panthers finished third as a team.

Sides, who won Big South Freshman of the Week one time last season, is the first HPU player to win golfer of the week accolades since Chase Wilson on Oct. 19, 2012. Redshirt-freshman A.J. Hopkins (Oct. 16) and Emile Menard (Oct. 2) were named freshman of the week during the fall season.

The Panthers will be back in action this weekend in Williamsburg, Va. in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate. The tournament will span three days with 18 holes each day on March 22-24.
