College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 11, Va. Wesleyan 10

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Marina Bailey’s game-winning goal with 3:02 left in regulation gave Guilford College an 11-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse victory at Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday. The junior’s third goal of the game capped a 3-0 Guilford run and helped the Quakers (4-3, 1-1 ODAC) to their third one-goal win of the season.

Guilford held a 7-3 halftime lead, but the Marlins reeled off the second half’s first six goals and took a 9-7 edge with 20 minutes left to play. Brooke Cabeceiras netted the final three goals of what was a 7-0 Virginia Wesleyan burst, including Megan Shallock’s score that ended the first-half scoring.
Corrie Gray ended Guilford’s draught with an unassisted goal midway through the second half, but Shallock answered eight seconds later to make it a 10-8 Marlins’ advantage with 15 minutes left.

Shallock’s second goal of the game proved the Marlins’ last as Eleanora Keene started the Quakers’ game-ending run at the 13:36 mark and tied the score on a free-position goal with 4:06 to play. Keene won the ensuing draw control, but the Quakers turned the ball over to Virginia Wesleyan. Cabeceiras unleashed a shot on goal, which Guilford’s Sammi Milbourn stopped for her ninth and final save. After a successful clear, Bailey netted what proved the game winner.

Guilford’s Keene led all scorers with four goals and also picked up four ground balls, which led the team.

Cabeceiras paced Virginia Wesleyan’s offense with her three second-half goals. Shallock, Tianna Garland and Candace Carey each scored twice. Madison Carroll tended the goal and made seven stops for the hosts.

Coach Sarah Lamphier’s Quakers host Lynchburg College Wednesday (3/25) in a 6:00 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.
