BRYSON FONVILLE NAMED ALL-AMERICAN

WASHINGTON – The accolades keep rolling in for Catholic University junior playmaker Bryson Fonville(Page High School). Named Landmark Conference Player of the Year earlier this month, he was Thursday named All-American.

Fonville, who led the Cardinals (23-6) to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ (NABC) Division III third team. He averaged a career-high 16.8 points and paced CUA in assists (5.3 apg), steals (1.8 spg), minutes per game (34.8) and free-throw percentage (.780).

Also this week, D3Hoops.com named the junior from Greensboro, N.C., first-team All-Middle Atlantic Region. The NABC put him on its All-District Middle Atlantic first team.

“I’ve been saying for a long time that Bryson is one of the best point guards in the nation, and these honors confirm it,” Cardinal Coach Steve Howes said. “He was remarkably consistent all year and was the engine that made us go.

“I’m excited he’s being recognized for his talent and performance.”

Fonville is the 19th All-American in school history and the first CUA point guard to be named All-American since Pat Maloney guided the Cardinals to the 2001 National Championship.

Fonville scored a career-high 38 points – including a 20-for-21 effort from the free throw line – in the Cards’ 87-80 NCAA playoff victory over Alvernia. It’s the most points a CUA player has ever scored at DuFour Center and the highest point total for any Cardinal at the Division III level.

Fonville became the 41st member of the CUA 1,000-point club in the Cards’ 68-65 win over Elizabethtown (Pa.) on Feb. 4. In the Cardinals’ 100-85 victory at Goucher, he set a Decker Sports & Rec Center record with a season-high 15 assists.

Fonville, Jay Howard and Corey Stanford led CUA to the Landmark Conference regular-season championship with a 15-1 record, including a 15-game winning streak, fourth-longest in program history. The Cardinals were coming off a 14-12 season and lost three seniors who were expected to be key contributors.
