College Baseball Final – Lynchburg 3, Guilford 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Martin Henderlite fanned 10 batters over seven innings to lead visiting Lynchburg College to a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball win at Guilford College Tuesday afternoon.

Henderlite (1-1) yielded two hits and a first-inning run, but settled down thereafter. He retired 14 of 15 Quakers (6-15, 2-9 ODAC) from the second to the seventh inning and struck out the side in the sixth. He had a strikeout in each of his seven frames, scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter.

Fellow senior Charlie Thieringer replaced Henderlite to start the eighth inning. After yielding Josh Shepherd’s second hit of the day, the right-hander retired the next six straight batters for his first save of 2015.

Lynchburg (6-12, 3-3 ODAC) banged out 15 hits off of four Guilford pitchers. Quakers’ starter Darin Salter (3-1) skirted danger thanks to three infield double plays. He started one in the fourth inning by knocking down Luke Rodgers’ liner and throwing home to Grayson Tuttle for the first out. Tuttle fired to third for the second out. Salter got out of the jam by retiring Will Hylton on a fly ball.
The Hornets broke through in the fifth inning on Joe Rogers’ two-run, bases-loaded single down the left-field line. After Jonathan Munn bunted the runners over to second and third, Joe Tomasulo plated Lynchburg’s third run with an RBI groundout.

Henderlite cruised into the seventh before the Quakers put two runners on base with two out. Hornets’ center-fielder Drew Taylor ended the threat with a diving catch of Herc Ingels’ sinking liner to shallow right-center field.

Rogers finished with a game-high three hits in addition to his two RBI. Ryan Katona also had three hits and scored once. Munn, Tomasulo and Rodgers each tallied two hits.

Shepherd and Kyle Humphrey both had two singles for the Quakers.

Coach Nick Black’s Quakers visit Methodist University Wednesday (3/26) in a nonconference game at 6:00 p.m.
