Elon Track & Field Phoenix Treks to NC State for Raleigh Relays

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team will compete this weekend, March 27-28, at the prestigious Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State. The meet kicks off on Friday, March 27, at 9:30 a.m. at the Paul Derr Track.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix last competed at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on March 13-14, to open its outdoor season. Elon had a few of its athletes post a number of great performances at the meet. Sophomore Bre’anna Warren established a new personal-best in the shot put with a throw of 44′ 9″ (13.64m) and was third overall. That mark moves her to third all-time in school history in the event.

In the discus throw, Bryanna Hames garnered a third-place finish in the event after she threw a distance of 151′ 6″ (46.18m), jumping to third all-time in school history on the performance list. Senior Jennifer Jarvis set a new personal-best in the hammer throw with her toss of 137′ 0″ (41.75m). That mark broke her into the top-five all-time on the program’s performance list.

Freshman Emily Dixon was second in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 9” (5.71m) and high jump with a cleared height of 5’ 3” (1.60m).

Esposito Named CAA Track Athlete of the Week
On Tuesday, Jen Esposito was tabbed the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Mansfield, Mass., native won the 400-meter hurdles race with a time of 1:00.26. That mark currently stands atop the league’s performance list and sits sixth in the NCAA East Region.

Esposito also contributed to the Phoenix’s win in the 4×400-meter relay race along with Jennifer Pash, Lydia Laws and Dixon. The quartet clocked in a time of 3:55.69 in the event, just missing breaking into the program’s top-five all-time performance list.

Top Performers Returning for Phoenix
Last season, the maroon and gold sent a program-best five athletes to compete at the NCAA East Preliminaries. Three of those performers return this season in Esposito (400-meter hurdles), Sydney Griffin (100-meter hurdles) and Megan Kirschling (high jump). Each athlete won a Southern Conference title in their respective event last year and also competed at the ECAC meet last weekend in Boston.

Tereza Novotna narrowly missed out on earning a bid the to NCAA Prelims in the 3,000-meters steeplechase last season. Novotna also captured the SoCon title in the event and set a new school-record with her time of 10:29.28. The Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, native also competed for her native country in the event last summer.

Warren won the SoCon championship in the discus throw last season. The sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., set a new school-record in the event with a heave of 153’ 2” (46.68m).

On Deck
Elon heads to Lynchburg, Va., to compete at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational next weekend, April 3-4.
