College Men’s Tennis Final – Va. Wesleyan 5, Guilford 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tyler Chang’s 6-0, 6-4 sixth-singles victory over Levi Bruff clinched Virginia Wesleyan College’s 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tennis win at Guilford College Sunday afternoon.

The Marlins (7-3, 5-1 ODAC) are ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s March 26 Division III South Atlantic Region Poll, five spots behind the Quakers (7-4, 6-2 ODAC). The loss ended Guilford’s season-long five-match winning streak.

Virginia Wesleyan took an early 2-1 lead on doubles victories by Chang and Adam Rosenblaum as well as Drew Tomajczyk and Brendan Kelleher. Chang and Rosenblaum topped Guilford’s Trevor Cox and Aaron Smedley, 8-3, at second doubles. Tomajczyk and Kelleher posted an 8-1 third-doubles triumph over the Quakers’ Bruff and Mesa Martorell.

Kelleher downed Mason Church at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-3, and Tomajczyk took a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Quakers’ Erik Meiler at third singles. Smedley edged Rosenblaum, 6-4, 6-4, to make it a 4-3 Marlins’ lead. Chang’s straight-set triumph proved the clinching point as Guilford’s Cox and Turner Votipka earned singles wins. Votipka’s contest at first singles with Graham Wilson lasted over two hours before Votipka prevailed, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Votipka also won his first-doubles match, 8-6, over Wilson and Kenneth Downing.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers visit Emory & Henry College next Saturday (4/4) in an ODAC match.
