College Softball Finals: Guilford 8-16, Shenandoah 3-3

WINCHESTER, Va.—Caroline Barnette produced five RBI over Guilford College’s Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader over Shenandoah University as the Quakers swept both games from the Hornets. Guilford took game one, 8-3, and claimed a five-inning victory in game two, 16-3.

Big innings were the theme for the Quakers in both contests as Guilford scored in bunches in each game. All of Guilford’s game one offense came in two four-run rallies in the third and sixth innings. The Quakers produced 17 base runners in game one while holding Shenandoah to just seven.

The Quakers busted game two open after leading, 5-2, through two innings thanks to a five-run third inning and then a crippling six-run fifth to end the contest early. Guilford benefited from 23 batters reaching base, including 16 hits while benefitting from four Hornet errors.

Barnette hit 4-for-4 and reached base on all eight appearances by drawing four walks. The sophomore connected on a two-run home run in the Quakers four-run rally in game one and added a triple and a game-two double. Marty Wilcox finished the afternoon 3-for-7 with a game two lead-off home run on the game’s first at-bat. Taylor Boyd hit 4-for-8 and drove in a team-high four runs in game two.

Shenandoah’s Madison Bradley led Hornet bats, finishing the afternoon 3-for-5 with three RBI, all in game one. Cassie Green added two RBI on a double in the second inning of game two.

Courtney Lackey (3-1) took game one complete-game win for the Quakers. The freshman gave up three runs (one un-eanrned) on six hits while fanning two and walking one. Tyler Miles (Burlington, N.C./Western Alamance) earned the game two start, giving up two runs (one un-earned) on one hit in two innings. Ashley Boteler (4-0) claimed the win giving up one run on two hits and striking out three in the final three innings.

Lindsay Corbin (0-5) took the loss for the Hornets in a complete-game effort, giving up seven runs on 12 hits while striking out five and walking four. Lisa Mitro (3-3) took the game two loss, giving up all 16 runs, though only four runs were earned. She struck out one and walked three.

The Quakers continue their weekend on the road tomorrow, facing Eastern Mennonite University for a 1:30 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
