HARRISONBURG, Va.—Guilford College’s Calli Pastor’s seventh-inning two-out two-RBI double in game two salvaged a Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader split with Eastern Mennonite University. The Royals took a wild game one, 14-12, while the Quakers took the nightcap, 6-4.
Eastern Mennonite (10-6, 5-5 ODAC) took a 7-0 lead after two innings of game one, but the Quakers stormed back to score nine un-answered runs to claim a two-run lead after three and a half innings. The Royals followed with four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to re-claim the lead. The Quakers mustered a rally in the final two innings with three runs and put runners at first and second with two out before the Royals retired the Quakers. Both teams combined for 29 hits and 11 errors in the first contest.
Guilford (16-8, 4-2 ODAC) claimed a 3-1 lead through two innings of game two before Eastern Mennonite erased the Quaker lead with two runs thanks to a throwing error. Angelia Miller claimed the lead for the Royals thanks to a one-out RBI-single, but the Royals would be retired in the inning when Jasmine Johnson looked to turn a single into a double and was put out in a run-down. With two outs and third base open, Pastor punched home the game-winning runs with a single and Erin Ogden added an insurance run as the Quakers claimed victory.
Ogden and Pastor led the Quakers with four RBI a piece with Ogden driving in three runs in game two. Pastor finished the afternoon 5-for-8 and posted one of two three-hit efforts for the Quakers in game one, joining Marty Wilcox, who finished 3-for-5 in the first contest. Wilcox and Caroline Barnette each connected on their fourth home run of the season in game one, where Barnette finished 2-for-5.
Jordan Aylor led the Royals with four RBI over the afternoon with a double and a home run. Aislinn Lucas finished a perfect 5-for-5, connecting on two home runs in game one with three RBI.
Ashley Boteler (3-1) took the loss in four and one-third innings of relief for Maggie Shaffer. Only six of the fourteen runs given up by Quaker pitching in game one were earned runs thanks to six Guilford errors. Each pitcher struck out one batter. Casey Snead (3-2) took the game two complete-game victory, giving up four runs (three un-earned) on seven hits while fanning six.
Cara Neikirk (2-1) claimed the game one win for Eastern Mennonite in one and two-thirds innings of relief of Janna Williams. Lauren Seale picked up her second save of the season in two and two-thirds innings, striking out three. Five of the 12 runs surrendered were earned thanks to five errors. Aylor (2-3) took the game two complete-game loss, giving up five runs on 11 hits and fanning six.
The Quakers return home Wednesday to host Emory & Henry College for a 3:00 p.m ODAC doubleheader.
