College Track and Field Results – Guilford Competes in Day One of VertKlasse Meeting at HPU

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College began competition in day one of the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University Friday afternoon and evening. With a majority mid-major Division I field, the meet contained schools from all three NCAA divisions.

Becca Benfield set a new record in the shot put, producing a mark of 9.74 meters. The mark was the fourth-best Division III mark, 43rd overall. This is Benfield fourth consecutive week re-writing the school’s record book in the event.

Summer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) produced the fifth-best Division III time in the 5,000 meter run, finishing at 20:27.18. The time is also the fourth-best finish in Guilford history.

David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) cracked the top ten in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a ninth-place finish at 9:36.16. The senior’s time was the best Division III time in the race in addition to the ninth-fastest in school history. Cason missed out on eighth place by .17 seconds.

Andris Goncarovs ran the fourth-fastest Division III time in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:23.61. Goncarovs placed 13th overall in the race.

The largest bulk of the Quakers, including the sprinters, will take to the track tomorrow in the second day of the VertKlasse Meeting.
