Elon WLAX Phoenix Falls to Tigers in CAA Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Elon women’s lacrosse team was not able to continue its current winning streak, falling 12-2 in its first Colonial Athletic Association game to three-time defending CAA Champion Towson tonight, April 3, in Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Elon (7-4, 0-1) won seven draws in the game with the help of two from Alexis Zadjura. The Phoenix finished 14-of-17 in clear attempts and picked up 10 ground balls, including three by Molly Garrigan.

The maroon and gold took 18 shots in the game, 13 on goal, with rookie Nicole Sinacori netting both of Elon’s scores on the day. Rachel Ramirez played the whole game between the pipes for the Phoenix and tallied nine saves.

The Tigers got off to a hot start, taking a 3-0 advantage in the first 10 minutes of play. With Towson leading 6-0, Sinacori netted Elon’s first score of the day at the 9:58 mark to put the Phoenix on the board. The Tigers added one more goal before the break to hold a 7-1 lead at the half.

After Towson scored the first goal of the second frame at the 28:11 mark, the Phoenix defense held the Tigers scoreless for almost 14 minutes until TU’s Paige Duncan made it a 9-1 game with 14:42 remaining. Towson netted three more scores before Sinacori scored her second goal of the game and her 16th of the season with 3:54 left to play to make it a 12-2 game.

For the game, the Tigers (5-5, 1-1) outshot the Phoenix, 27-18, claimed a 9-7 overall advantage in draw controls and went a perfect 18-of-18 in clear attempts. Towson saw three scores and one assist on the night from Andi Raymond, while Kaitlyn Montalbano, Gabby Cha and Duncan each netted two goals.

The Phoenix remains on the road to face Delaware on Sunday, April 5, in a 1 p.m. game in Newark, Del.
