College Baseball Finals: Guilford 6-1, Hampden-Sydney 0-7

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.—Guilford College’s Lou Trosch and Chase Shuford combined to shut out Hampden-Sydney College in game one of Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader as the Quakers and Tigers split the doubleheader. The Quakers won game one, 6-0, while the Tigers came back to claim game two, 7-1.

The biggest bulk of Gulford’s offense in game one came in the seventh inning where the Quakers posted four runs, powered by a Herc Ingels bases-loaded triple with two outs that occurred thanks to a dropped third strike where Jacob Roberts reached base, elongating the inning. Hampden-Sydney rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning, placing runners on first and second with two out, but Shuford handcuffed Jack Elliott at home plate with a strikeout to end the game.

The Tigers roared back in game two with five runs in the first two innings to jump to a 5-1 lead. Totaling 13 hits, the Tigers added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. Like the Tigers in game one, the Quakers placed runners at first and second base with two outs, but we’re retired one at-bat later.

Ingels led Quaker bats, finishing the afternoon 4-for-10 with a triple and three RBI. Kyle Humphrey (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) drove home two runs in game one, finish 3-for-9. Tyler Petersen hit 4-for-8 over the afternoon, 2-for-4 in each contest.

Jeff Gray led the Tigers, batting 5-for-8 include 4-for-4 in game two with a double and two RBI. Spencer Wiles finished 3-for-7 in the afternoon with a game two home run and two RBI.

Trosch (1-2) collected the game one win giving up just two hits and striking out three batters in six innings. Chase Shuford collected his first save of the season giving up three hits, fanning three, and walking one in three innings. John Todd (0-6) took the game two loss giving up five runs (two un-earned) on six hits while fanning one. Darin Salter threw two perfect innings while Drew Martin and Justin Morrison (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) combined to give up just one hit in the final two innings while striking out three.

Reggie Johnson (1-3) took the loss for the Tigers, giving up five runs (four un-earned) on six hits while striking out eight in seven innings. Billy Nixon (3-4) claimed the game two win giving up one un-earned run on four hits while fanning six batters. The Quakers continue ODAC play Wednesday, traveling to Lewis-Gale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark to face Roanoke College for a 7 p.m. contest.
