Early Runs Lead Elon Baseball to Series Win Over Northeastern

ELON, N.C. – Six first-inning runs was all that the Elon baseball team needed as the Phoenix claimed a series win over the visiting Northeastern Huskies in a 6-3 contest on Sunday, April 5.

Elon (14-16, 6-3 Colonial Athletic Association) started its offensive outburst with one out in the first. Joey Tomko’s single was followed by walks to both Chris King and Ryan Cooper to load the bases. The Phoenix then took a 1-0 lead when Casey Jones took a 3-2 pitch for ball four to force in the first run. With two away, the maroon and gold was the beneficiary of a wild pitch as King raced home. Andy Moorewould make it a 5-0 Phoenix lead when he laced a 2-1 pitch to the gap in right-center before later scoring on a Husky error. In the inning, Elon drew five of its 10 walks on the day and needed just two hits.

The game remained 6-0 until the fourth. With one away and a runner on first thanks to an Elon error, Nolan Lang doubled in the first Husky run with a shot to left-center. Northeastern (11-18, 4-5) would score a second run in the inning when Michael Foster singled home Lang. Northeastern would add one more in the eighth on a Joey Scambia ground out.

Both teams had numerous opportunitIes to add to their run totals. Elon would strand 10 runners and Northeastern 12.

Lucas Bakker (3-3) claimed the victory after allowing two unearned run on five hits in five innings of work. He struck out five. Joe McGillicuddy garnered his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth.

The loss went to Northeastern starter James Mulry (1-5) who was charged with all six Elon runs (five earned) in just one inning.

Moore had Elon’s lone multi-hit day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.

The Phoenix will be back home at Latham Park on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. against North Carolina State.
