HPU’s Julia Burns Earns Big South WLAX Weekly Honor

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University women’s lacrosse goalkeeper Julia Burns has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

It marks the third time that Burns has earned the weekly award in her career and the second time this season.

The Arnold, Md., native put forth one of the best defensive efforts of her career Saturday in HPU’s 18-2 win at Gardner-Webb to open conference play. She made seven saves while allowing just two goals in a full 60 minutes of action.

The two goals allowed tied her career low for a full game, while her .778 save percentage marked her second-best effort in a Panther uniform. Burns’ strong play helped HPU give up its fewest goals in a game in nearly two years.

This season, the senior ranks sixth in the nation in saves per game (9.80) and is 18th in the country and first in the Big South in save percentage (.480). She has posted a 6.11 goals against average over HPU’s last three contests.

Burns and the Panthers return to action Monday at 6 p.m. vs. Presbyterian.
