2014-15 Winter Season Wells Fargo Cup Leaders Announced

Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for winter sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Wells Fargo Cup is sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA. The award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program is in its 36th year.

Defending Wells Fargo Cup champion Cary Green Hope has moved into first place in the 4-A standings, while Cardinal Gibbons paces the 3-A class. Carrboro, which has won the Cup for the last three years, leads the way in 2-A and Community School of Davidson has taken over first place among the 1-A schools.

In the 4-A classification, Green Hope has taken over first after occupying second place after the fall sports, tallying 332.5 points. Green Hope was buoyed by a second-place finish in men’s swimming and fourth-place performance in women’s swimming to go with fifth in women’s indoor track.

Charlotte Myers Park, the state 4-A champion in women’s basketball, recorded 285 points and is now in second. The Mustangs men’s basketball team was in the top eight in the 4-A tournament and the men’s swimming program garnered eighth in the state meet.

Broughton, which held the top spot after the fall, is in third with 247.5 points. Broughton’s winter points came from a top-eight performance by the women’s basketball team. Charlotte Catholic (225) is in fourth overall after taking the women’s swimming state championships once again and Charlotte Ardrey Kell, the state runner-up in men’s basketball, is fifth at 222.5.

Cardinal Gibbons maintained its advantage in 3-A with playoff points in four sports, including state runner-up finishes in both swimming championships and women’s indoor track. The Crusaders earned a total of 530 points, ahead of second-place and defending Wells Fargo champion Waxhaw Marvin Ridge at 420.

Marvin Ridge had a great winter to surge into second, including state championships at the 3-A level in women’s swimming, men’s indoor track and women’s indoor track, to garner 225 points in the winter toward its total of 420.

Weddington is in third place with a total of 387.5, including playoff points in five sports that featured a state semifinal run by the women’s basketball team and third place in men’s indoor track. Chapel Hill is fourth at 350 after winning the men’s swimming title and finishing as state runner-up in women’s basketball, and Asheville in fifth with 237.5 points.

In 2-A, Carrboro rolled up 145 points in the winter for a total of 372.5, good for a 72.5-point margin over the field. The Jaguars tied for the top spot among 2-A teams in men’s swimming, placed third in women’s swimming and got to the final eight in the dual team wrestling championships.

Second-place Durham North Carolina School of Science and Math has a total of 300 points, performing well in the swimming championships with second place among 2-A schools in women’s competition and third among the men.

Newport Croatan, with state runner-up points in both women’s indoor track and wrestling and playoff points in four sports, has moved into third place at 297.5 points, followed by Lake Norman Charter (267.5) and East Lincoln (225).

In the 1-A classification, Community School of Davidson has slipped ahead of fall leader Bishop McGuinness by five points after trailing by 10 after the fall season. CSD had an excellent winter, with a first-place finish among women indoor track teams in 1-A, a tie for fourth among schools in men’s 1-A indoor track, and points in both men’s and women’s swimming.

Raleigh Charter, the top 1-A school in women’s swimming and second in men’s swimming, is third with 230 points. Lincoln Charter, which garnered big points in swimming with its men’s team the tops in 1-A and the women’s team third while also placing in the top eight in women’s basketball, has 210 points. Misenheimer Gray Stone Day is fifth at 192.5.

Wells Fargo Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wells Fargo Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wells Fargo Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wells Fargo Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall, again after the winter sports, and then concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
