CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The High Point University women’s golf team finished the first day of the Chattanooga Classic in eighth place out of 10 teams with a combined score of 638 (319-319) on Monday at the Council Fire Golf Club.
“There aren’t a lot of positive things I can say about today unfortunately,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Casey’s first round score was good and Tan and Cayla had good rounds in the rain. We didn’t hit the ball well in general and we didn’t make many putts from five feet out or more. It’s disappointing and I hope we have the opportunity to play in the morning so we can attempt to prove that we are one of the better teams here.”
Junior Casey Ward carded a 36-hole score of 152 (74-78) to end the day in a tie for 13th. Ward was second in the field with 26 pars on the day.
Freshman Cayla Smith shot a 156 (79-77) on the day to finished in a tie for 23rd while junior Tan Cheeranont finished the day in a tie for 41st with a combined score of 162. Cheeranont shot an 85 in the opening round, but bounced back with a 77 in the second round. Sophomore Danielle Fuss finished in a tie for 54th with a total score of 168 (81-87) and senior Grier Bennett finished in a tie for 59th with a two-round score of 175 (88-87).
Host Chattanooga leads the team race after the first day with a combined score of 594 (298-296). Central Arkansas is in second with a score of 601 (300-301) while Western Kentucky is in third with a score of 613 (302-311). Louisiana Monroe (308-317) and Marshall (319-306) are tied for fourth with matching scores of 625.
Vanderbilt’s Morgan Ransom leads the individual standings with a score of 143 (71-72) while competing as an individual. Ransom leads by two strokes over a group of three golfers comprised of Chattanooga’s Agathe Sauzon (75-70), Dartmouth’s Isabelle Kane (72-73) and Vanderbilt’s Irina Gabasa (71-74).
