HPU Women’s Golf Finishes Eighth At The Chattanooga Classic

• High Point finished in eighth place at the Chattanooga Classic with a score of 955.
• Junior Casey Ward was the Panthers’ top finisher, ending the tournament in a tie for 17th with a score of 230.
• HPU begins play at the Big South Women’s Golf Championship next week.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 317 in the third and final round of the Chattanooga Classic on Tuesday and finished in eighth place out of 10 teams with a total score of 955.

“We hit the ball little better today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “We had eight birdies, but we also had a ton of double bogeys. Casey had a consistent tournament and the others had moments of greatness. We have just got a few days before we leave for conference so will have to work hard to get ready.”

Junior Casey Ward carded a 78 in the final round of the Chattanooga Classic and finished in a tie for 17th with a three-round total of 230 (74-78-78). Junior Tan Cheeranont had the low round of the day for the Panthers with a 76 and finished in a tie for 34th with a 54-hole score of 238 (85-77-76).

Freshman Cayla Smith finished in a tie for 36th with a total score of 240 (79-77-84). Sophomore Danielle Fuss (81-87-86) and senior Grier Bennett (88-87-79) tied for 56th with matching scores of 254.

Host Chattanooga claimed the team title with a three-round total score of 887 (298-296-293). Central Arkansas finished in second with a score of 902 (300-301-301) while Western Kentucky finished in third with a combined score of 915 (302-311-302). Louisiana Monroe (930) and Marshall (939) rounded out the top five.

Vanderbilt’s Morgan Ransom claimed the individual medal while competing as an individual with a 54-hole score of 214 (71-72-71). Melania Bajo Geijo of Jacksonville State finished in second with a score of 217 (74-74-69) while Irina Gabasa of Vanderbilt finished in third with a score of 218 (71-74-73).

High Point begins play at the Big South Women’s Golf Championship on Monday, April 13, in Georgetown, S.C. The three-day 54-hole tournament will be played at the DeBourdieu Club.
