College Softball Finals: #7 Virginia Wesleyan 9-10, Guilford 0-0

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Virginia Wesleyan College’s Kristina Karagorgis and Mary Shipp held Guilford College to five hits over Sunday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader where the Marlins swept the Quakers. Virginia Wesleyan took game one, 8-0, in six innings while collecting the nightcap, 10-0, in five innings. The Marlins are currently ranked seventh in the recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III poll.

Karagorgis (13-2) struck out nine in a complete-game victory for the Marlins and gave up just two hits. Shipp (12-2) gave up three hits and struck out eight batters in a five-inning complete game effort.

Rachel Howard produced the Quakers’ lone extra-base hit on Guilford’s Senior Day, batting 1-for-4 on the afternoon with a double.

Kayla Dost led Marlin bats, totaling five RBI and a home run in a 4-for-6 afternoon. Courtney Bogan finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with three RBI and a game-two double. Cassetty Howerin added a home run and three RBI.

Ashley Boteler (3-2) took the game one loss for the Quakers, striking out and walking two batters in four and one-third inning before being relieved by Courtney Lackey who struck out two in the remaining portion of the first contest. Tyler Miles (2-4) took the loss in a two and one-third inning start before being relieved by Rebekah Langston who collected a hit in her lone at-bat. Casey Snead threw the final two innings, striking out and walking two batters.

The Quakers close out their regular season home schedule Wednesday, hosting Roanoke College for a 3 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
