GREENSBORO
Wesleyan Christian wanted to prove it’s one of the best area baseball teams overall, not just among private schools.

And, with Saturday’s 3-0 victory against Southeast Guilford to win the Farm Bureau Invitational at NewBridge Bank Park, the Trojans went a long way toward doing that.

Wesleyan (12-0), ranked No. 3 among NCISAA 3A teams, scored once in each of the first, third and fifth innings, while pitcher Riley Isenhour settled in and threw a complete-game shutout.

“It was an outstanding performance by Riley Isenhour, my junior left-hander,” Trojans coach Scott Davis said. “We knew he’d be able to control the tempo of the game, and he did a fantastic job.

“And anytime you play in environment like this against a team like Southeast Guilford, which is the No. 1 team in the Triad, and win, it says a lot about your program. So, we’re very excited. It was a great game tonight.”

Isenhour (4-0) scattered six hits while walking none and striking out four. He allowed two hits in each of the first two innings and then limited the Falcons (9-5) to just two hits and three baserunners overall over the final five innings.

Southeast finished the game with just one runner reaching second or third.

  1. Congrats to High Point Wesleyan on their win. Thanks go out to Dave Beasley for approaching Donald Moore with this idea for this tournament four years ago. Thanks to all the SEG parents who helped make it a success– John McDade–Dave Michaels and others. Thanks to the SEG parents who volunteer and work hard for SEG baseball– Schiebly family—Coble family and others. Thanks to Andy Durham and the Grasshopper staff– Katie–Jake–Shaun for all you did.
Thanks to all our sponsors and Farm Bureau for allowing us to award college scholarships to the student athletes that participated. This is a premier tournament. I do not know of any HS Tournament that is played at a better facility, broadcast live via internet radio, gives away college scholarship money and allows the participating schools to share in the profits. We also work hard to contact college coaches and scouts and help the participating players to be seen and recruited. Great tournamet and I am proud of the way our Falcons played.

  2. Very clean baseball by the Wesleyan team. Their defense did not commit errors and they got outstanding pitching from Isenhour and when you do not make errors and you have excellent pitching, you win ball games. Glad Wesleyan Christian Academy was in the tournament and for the young man from Southeast Guilford, he threw his heart out Saturday night and Southeast has very strong pitching too, their staff threw three complete games in this tournament. I would have Alley, Michaels and Steed, all three of them on the All-Tournament team. You have to put Wesleyan among the best high school teams in all of the state and with the lineup they have and the way they get on and run the bases they have to a top contender for the Independent Schools 3-A Title. Coach Davis does a super job with his kids and I do hope that they will be invited back for next year. Mr. Beasley and Donald Moore have really hit on a winning idea with this Spring tournament and I would like to see this grow and see them bring in more Guilford County teams on both the private and public levels. Hope Northwest and Ragsdale might look this way next year and that the teams from the Dudley tournament will give this downtown tournament some consideration too. Doesn’t matter if you win or lose, you are getting the chance to play three baseball games at a great facility this really is a great event. Good luck to the teams when they return to conference play this week.

  3. We need to cancel some of these sporting events and spend more time on academics….

All we hear about are sports and athletics and athletes.

What happened to the academics and the students? Too much focus on sports around here. A return to the classroom and more emphasis placed on school work would be appreciated.

Let’s see what we can do to strive for a better balance of sports and studies or if you prefer, a better balance of athletics and academics in Guilford County.

I am sure the out of work, former athletes, would all agree with me.

  4. Just look back at the four scholarships that were presented…That seems to be a great/large step in the right direction when it comes to the academics…These young men have been doing what it takes in the classroom and on the baseball field and there is something to be said for that…To me, that proves that the academics are evident and there are quite a few kids that know how to play ball and take care of business in the classroom…

Got give these kids credit, they have proven themselves to be “true” student-athletes and they needed to recognized and they were and Jeff Webster and his crew at Farm Bureau were right on top of it all coming through with the goods….

  5. If you analyze the statistics on college campus’ around the country you will find that student athlete GPA’s are typically higher than the average student. Athletics require discipline, focus and organization as well as time management skills that far outweigh the typical high school students. I applaud These young men and women for their extraordinary efforts!
