• The Panthers dropped their second-straight game to No. 25 Coastal Carolina with an 8-3 loss on Sunday evening.
• The series loss to the Chanticleers is HPU’s first in conference play this season.
• Sophomore Josh Greene drove in two of High Point’s three runs in the game.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team fell to No. 25 Coastal Carolina by a score of 8-3 on Sunday evening at Williard Stadium. Sophomore Josh Greene drove in two of the Panthers’ three runs in the loss.

“Five runs were enough to win tonight and Coastal Carolina did that in the first two innings,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “We were not very effective on the mound, even when we did score we didn’t put up a zero the next inning. We punched out 11 times and only left four guys on base which tells you we had few opportunities to score.”

Sophomore Cas Silber took the loss for High Point and dropped to 3-2 on the season. Silber pitched five innings and gave up seven runs, six earned on seven hits and four walks while striking out five.

Austin Kerr earned the win on the mound for CCU to improve to 7-0 on the season. Kerr gave up three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 5-1/3 innings of work.

High Point drops to 17-16 overall and 6-5 in the Big South. With the loss, the Panthers drop their first conference series of the season. Coastal Carolina improves to 25-9 overall and 9-2 in the Big South with the win.

Coastal scored two runs in the first and three runs in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Connor Owings hit a double and scored on an RBI single by G.K. Young. Michael Paez also scored in the first on a passed ball after being hit by a pitch. In the following inning, CCU got an RBI single by Anthony Marks and a two-run home run by Owings.

High Point got on the board with two runs in the fourth to pull back within three at 5-2. Senior Josh Spano and freshman Carson Jackson both singled and came around to score on an RBI single by Greene and an RBI groundout by senior Brady Williamson.

The Chanticleers responded with two runs in the next inning as Tyler Chadwick earned a two-out walk and Zach Remillard followed with a two-run home run to put Coastal Carolina back ahead five at 7-2.

High Point scored a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Greene to score Angelis, but CCU came right back with a run of its own the next half inning on a Remillard sacrifice fly to maintain its five-run lead.

Greene went 1-3 on the day with two RBI while Jackson finished 2-4 with a run scored. Spano, Angelis and junior Dominic Fazio recorded the other three hits on the day for the Panthers.

High Point will try to avoid a sweep with a win in the third and final game of the series against Coastal Carolina on Monday, April 13, at Williard Stadium. First pitch in the series finale is set for 1 p.m., and admission to the game is free.
