HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University women’s basketball head coach DeUnna Hendrix has announced the signing of seven student-athletes that will compete for HPU beginning in fall 2015.
The class is made up of seven players – six high school signees and one junior college transfer – and will replenish a roster that lost five seniors to graduation.
Kyrie’ Chandler, Lindsey Edwards, Haleigh Hatfield and Shea Morgan signed with the program in November and will be joined by Bre Davis, Taylor McGlashan and Emma Bockrath in the class as spring signees.
“We are super excited about this class,” Hendrix said. “We are right on with the type of character kids that we want to bring to High Point University. It is also a complete class in terms of talent at every position and pieces that will be significant parts to what we accomplish in the future.”
Kyrie’ Chandler | 5-6 | Guard | North Cobb | Powder Springs, Ga.
Chandler compiled over 1,400 points, 300 steals, 300 rebounds and 300 steals at North Cobb High School for head coach John Speeney. She is a three-time all-district selection. The combo guard was named team MVP each of the last two seasons and played a vital role in her team’s run to the state semifinals. She also plays shortstop and pitcher on the school’s softball team while playing for her father Vernon Chandler.
“Kyrie’ is a point guard that will set the tempo for us and will also be more of a defensive presence,” Hendrix continued. “She’s going to be a little gnat on the ball defensively and set the table on offense.”
Bre Davis | 5-6 | Guard | Louisburg College | Fayetteville, N.C.
Davis scored 9.3 points and averaged 1.9 assists per game in her freshman season at Louisburg College to help the Hurricanes to a 21-7 record. Prior to her year at Louisburg, Davis played four seasons of varsity basketball at Seventy-First High School for Tracie Taylor. During her senior year, she was named All-Mid South Conference while posting 11.0 points and 3.0 assists per contest while drilling 31 3-pointers.
“Bre is a tireless worker,” Hendrix said. “She is a combo guard who knows how to score, but can also set the table for her teammates. She will be somewhat of a replacement for Ashante Richard in terms of her speed and her responsibility to control the pace for our team.”
Lindsey Edwards | 5-10 | Guard | Roland Park County | Perry Hall, Md.
Edwards joins the Panthers after playing four seasons at Roland Park County for head coach Scott Buckley. She earned All-Metro honors in each of the last two seasons and led her team to the IAAM A conference final for the first time in 10 years.
“Lindsey will be a long guard – bigger than we’ve had in the past” Hendrix said. “At 5-feet-10-inches, she can slash and get out in transition and add a defensive component that we haven’t had in recent years.”
Haleigh Hatfield | 6-0 | Guard/Forward | Mount Tabor | Winston-Salem, N.C.
Hatfield is rated as a 3-star recruit by ESPN and is listed as the No. 75 wing in the 2015 class. She is a talented scorer who eclipsed 1,000 points early in her junior season. The local prospect has averaged more than 15 points per game in each of her four high school seasons.
“Haleigh is a mismatch nightmare and will create matchup problems for our opponents,” Hendrix continued. “She can play the three and the four and can shoot extremely well from behind the 3-point line, but she also can rebound and play in the post. It’s always great to get a local kid when we can keep them at home.”
Shea Morgan | 5-9 | Forward | Fairmont | Kettering, Ohio
Morgan played four seasons for head coach Lacy Romine at Kettering Fairmont. The forward averaged 15.0 points and 8.7 rebounds to earn All-Greater Western Ohio Conference honors as well as All-Ohio honorable mention accolades in 2014-15. Morgan and Bockrath were AAU teammates and come to HPU as close friends.
“Shea is a post presence that is different than what we’ve had,” Hendrix said. “She can expand the defense by shooting the three, but is more of an I.Q. player that can pick defenses apart with her passing ability. She can make plays happen and creates blocks and steals by always being in the right place.”
Taylor McGlashan | 6-2 | Forward | Cherokee | Marlton, N.J.
McGlashan is a long and athletic post player that averaged nine points in her senior season for Shannon Bretz at Cherokee High School. She earned all-conference honors her freshman, sophomore and senior campaign. The forward served as team captain during her junior and senior seasons and led Cherokee to a 20-win year in 2014-15. McGlashan, whose father ran track at Seton Hall and grandfather ran in the Olympics, also is a sprinter on the track team.
“Taylor flew under the radar in the recruiting process and I’m glad she did,” Hendrix explained. “She is going to be a back-to-the-basket shot-blocking presence for us. She runs the floor well, so I see her excelling within our system. Taylor also gives us the size that we need at 6-feet-2-inches.”
Emma Bockrath | 5-9 | Guard | Alter | Kettering, Ohio
Bockrath will bring a winning mentality to the program after playing four seasons for Christina Hart at Kettering Alter. The combo guard helped her team to the 2014-15 state championship after the squad finished as the state runner-up in 2013-14. Bockrath averaged 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in her senior season to earn All-Ohio and District 15 Player of the Year honors. She chose HPU over Wake Forest and Vanderbilt.
“Emma is a do-it-all guard who just knows how to win,” Hendrix said. “She has a great mid-range game, but also can shoot the three and get to the rim. Her defense is her bread and butter, though. Emma is a scrappy player who can routinely get six or eight points a game off of steals.”
