Elon Phoenix, Munro Lead CAA Women’s Golf Championship After One Round

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – Elon’s debut at the CAA Women’s Golf Championship was a good one as the Phoenix finished the first round of the tournament with a seven-stroke lead over its nearest competitor. The maroon and gold shot a first-round score of 295 and was led by freshman Heather Munro who is tied for the individual lead after one round of play.

Munro shares the lead with Delaware’s Andrea Slane as both fired a one-under 71 on Friday at the St. James Plantation. Munro opened her round with a par on one before recording birdies on both number two and number five. At the turn, Munro was one-under par. After two bogeys put her one-over after 16 holes, Munro notched birdies on her final two holes of the day to get her score to 71. Her four birdies were tied for the second most in the field.

Just two strokes back with a one-over 73 is Kelsey Badmaev who is tied for fifth out of 40 players. Badmaev birdied her first hole of the day and also added birdies on numbers nine, 12 and 13.

Another freshman, Hilda Kristjansdottir, shot a two-over 74 and is tied for seventh. Her lone birdie came on her final hole, posting a three on the par-four 18th hole.

Sunna Vidisdottir’s 77 has her in a tie for 14th. She finished her front nine with a birdie. Vidisdottir is followed by Emily Brooks who ended the day tied for 31st with an 82. She also had one birdie.

As a team, the Phoenix had 11 birdies, trailing just the 12 posted by UNC Wilmington on the day.

Round two will be played at The Reserve Club at St. James Plantation on Saturday.
