WALLBURG —
The Southern Guilford baseball team needed to find a way to win. And, in the end, it came through.

Ryan Caveness hit a three-run home run in the top of the 11th to highlight a four-run outburst in the inning and help the Storm defeat Ledford 4-1 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference play Friday at Ledford’s Gary Hinkle Field.

“That game was incredible,” Southern coach Jeff Carter said. “It was an old-fashioned slugfest, but it was a pitchers’ duel – actually three or four pitchers’ duels. Both teams had been fighting and scratching all game. So, we were very fortunate we got a couple infield hits and got the home run right down the line. That allowed us to settle down, but up to that point it was just a tight, tight game. …

“You hate to say this was a ‘must win’ game,” he said, his team trailing first-place Asheboro and Southwestern Randolph by two losses. “You only have a select number of conference games to begin with, but we dropped a couple we should’ve won. So, this was an important win. It keeps us in the hunt for it, and the main thing is that it keeps our state playoff hopes alive.”
