Elon Baseball Secures Series Win With 13-3 Victory Over Towson

TOWSON, Md. – In his first career start, Elon’s Nick Beaulac struck out a personal-best nine in five innings and Danny Lynch hit the first grand slam of his career as the Phoenix baseball squad secured a series win thanks to a 13-3 victory over the Towson Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

The Phoenix upped its mark to 18-18 overall and 9-5 in CAA play. Towson fell to 10-24-4, 4-10.

Lynch ended the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and career-best five RBI to lead the Elon offense. Both Ryan Cooper and Andy Moore had two-hit outings and drove in two for the maroon and gold, while Kory Shumate hit the first home run of his career with the Phoenix.

For Towson, Richie Blosser collected two of the team’s six hits.

Beaulac improved to 3-1 as he picked up the win. He allowed just one run on two hits in his starting debut. Beaulac fanned five of the first 10 hitters he faced and struck out four consecutive hitters at one point. Chris Hall went 2.2 innings to pick up the first save of his career.

Towson’s Kevin Ross (1-5) went eight innings, but was charged with five runs on five hits.

Up next: Elon will look for the three-game sweep of Towson at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

How it happened: With the game tied at one in the top of the fourth, Cooper reached with a two-out double. Towson then elected to intentionally walk Chris King and, after a wild pitch moved up both runners, James Venuto. That loaded the bags for Lynch who crushed an 0-1 pitch deep over the fence in left-center. Elon would blow the game wide open in the ninth, sending 14 hitters to the plate and scoring eight runs. In that inning, the Phoenix had just four hits but drew four walks and had two batters hit by pitches.

Inside the box score: Casey Jones stretched his streak of reaching base safely to a season-high 20 games … Towson stranded runners in eight of the nine innings … The Tigers were just 3-for-26 with runners on base and 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position … Elon’s 13 runs were the most for the team since a 13-1 win over William & Mary on March 28 … Six of Elon’s nine hits went for extra bases.

Notes: Lynch’s grand slam was the fourth of the year for Elon … Elon’s eight-run ninth was its highest-scoring inning of the year.
