Guilford County radio legend Jimmy Fulmer dead at age 74:The day the music died

Got the word this morning that Guilford County radio legend Jimmy Fulmer had died over the weekend at age 74…

I was watching the David Letterman Show back on last Friday night and it kind of fits Jimmy Fulmer leaving us last Friday and John Mayer singing that Don McLean song, “The Day the Music Died/American Pie” on Letterman….Long song, really a long song from the 70’S and Jimmy Fulmer lived a long life and he was in his prime playing music over at the old 1320AM WCOG, back in the 70’s and he died in his 70’S at 74…

Jimmy Fulmer came to Greensboro by way of Tennessee and he had hit radio in Tennessee, by way of way of the Army, where he played music on the Armed Forces Radio Network….Fulmer was a native of Arkansas and once he got to Greensboro, he never made it back to the Razorback State…

Fulmer produced over 5,000 high school football, college football, Greensboro Hornets baseball, Greensboro Bats baseball and Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball games while working for WKEW and WPET radio stations…Add Penfield, Charlie Harville, Jim Pritchett, Bob Licht, Bill Wardle, Jeff Daniels, Scott Pryzwanski, Johnny Phelps, Larry Dunlap, Mike Hogewood, Larry Davis, Bruce Mitchell, Dick Stewart, Gary Von Cannon, Jimmy Fulmer worked with them all and made them all sound good…

Mr. Fulmer knew his music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and he got his sports game on in the 90’s, 2000’s/2010 era and beyond, working for 6 decades of radio here in the Gate City…

I had the opportunity to co-host a daily sports talk show with Jimmy Fulmer at WKEW AM1400 radio for twelve years and Jimmy was pretty much laid back, but he did get pumped when it came time to give it up for his Arkansas Razorbacks, his Miami Dolphins and his Oakland Raiders….

Jimmy Fulmer paid his radio dues and he put his time and spent much of time making the other people around him sound better and until the dementia got him here in the last few years, there were not many broadcasts that Jimmy Fulmer could not get on the air….

RIP to Mr. Fulmer today and he will not be forgotten on the Greensboro and Guilford County sports front lines….He fought the good fight and he left out of here as a winner…

  1. Jimmy was one of my favorite DJs at WCOG. Andy good words for a good man from a good man. I remember when you did our Western Guilford baseball games on WPET and Jimmy was the station controller. He was always reliable. Hard to believe he’s gone.

  2. Lots of games worked by Jimmy Fulmer over the years…

It is hard to believe he is gone.

  3. listened to him on wcog for years that was the only station around except for wbig-one of the nicest guys on radio with the jock and jimmy show at wkew-he will be missed
