ATHLETES FROM SOUTH POINT, MOREHEAD EARN NCHSAA PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS
CHAPEL HILL — Garrett Davila of South Point High School in Belmont and Candice Corcoran of Morehead High School in Eden are the winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Davila, a senior lefthanded pitcher for the Red Raiders, threw his sixth shutout of the baseball season last week, holding East Gaston to just two hits in a 6-0 victory. He went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 while walking two and hitting one batter. He also supported the South Point cause at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in.
Davila has signed with the University of Tennessee but is also drawing a number of professional baseball scouts at each game.
Corcoran is a senior at Morehead who is playing both women’s soccer and softball during the same season. Last week, as Morehead celebrated its Senior Night in soccer, Corcoran scored a goal and had two assists to lead the Lady Panthers to a 5-1 victory over Northeast Guilford. Corcoran, a midfielder and defender, is second on the team in goals and leads the conference in assists. She has been chosen to play in the North Carolina Coaches’ Association East-West all-star soccer game this summer,
Later in the week she led the way for the Morehead softball team in a big win over Eastern Guilford. She was three for three at the plate, drove in three runs, stole three bases and scored twice in the 15-0 triumph. Corcoran, captain of the team, leads the conference in batting average at .553 and is second in the conference in stolen bases with 18.

I have a hard time with this, because I saw a shutout from East Forsyth’s Brody Lawson, where he had one walk. Even though he had 6K’s, I would take his performance over the one of Davilla’s. Sounds like Davilla might be battling some nerves with the scouts there, though.
