Elon Bats Stay Hot in 7-4 Win at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Four Elon batters had multi-hit games and three Phoenix pitchers combined did not allow a walk as the maroon and gold claimed a 7-4 victory over Campbell at Jim Perry Stadium on Wednesday, April 22.

Elon improved to 20-19 on the 2015 campaign. Campbell fell to 25-17 and lost its seventh consecutive outing.

Both Andy Moore and Casey Jones picked up three hits for Elon, while Kory Shumate and Nick Zammarelli had two-hit nights. Zammarelli drove in three and Danny Lynch picked up two RBI.

Seth LaRue had four of Campbell’s 13 hits and Cole Hallum was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Jake Stalzer improved to 2-4 after allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings. He struck out three. Joe McGillicuddy struck out two while throwing the ninth for his sixth save of the year.

The loss went to Nick Thayer (5-3) who was charged with five runs (four earned) on eight hits in just four innings.

Up next: The Phoenix returns to Latham Park for a CAA series with league-leading UNCW. The Seahawks are rated as high as 22nd in the country. All three games will be broadcast on WSML 104.5 FM / 1200 AM and a video stream will be available through Phoenix All-Access.

How it happened: With the game tied at two going to the fifth inning, Elon loaded the bases with a Jones double, Shumate single and a catcher’s interference with nobody out. Zammarelli came through with a two-RBI single and the Phoenix later scored a third run on a Camel error.

Inside the box score: Elon sent nine men to the plate in the three-run fifth … Moore has had three hits in three of his last five games … The Phoenix was 6-for-20 with runners in scoring position, while Campbell was just 1-for-9.

Notes: Stalzer made his first start since March 24 at NC State … Jones, who finished a home run shy of the cycle, collected his 44th career double to move into 10th place all-time in program history.
