Elon Softball Phoenix Offense Powers Past Aggies, 11-2

ELON, N.C. – Nine runs produced in the second and third innings aided the Elon University softball team to a 11-2 victory over North Carolina A&T on Tuesday evening, April 28, at Hunt Softball Park.

The Phoenix (27-20) snapped its overall five-game losing skid after tallying 14 hits against the Aggies (13-27) in its early-week matchup. The 14 hits is a new single-season high for Elon after the maroon and gold was no-hit in its last contest at then No. 22/23 James Madison on Sunday.

Freshmen Hannah Olson (3-or-4) and Kara Shutt (3-for-3) led the Phoenix with three hits each while Emily Roper (2-for-3) and Kiandra Mitchum (2-for-3) also had multi-hits on the day. Shutt led the maroon and gold with five RBI also.

Senior Eve Clausen (1-0) was rewarded with her first win of the year after pitching 2.0 scoreless innings in relief with a hit allowed and a strikeout in her longest outing of the season.

The Rundown: Elon took the lead in the opening frame on a Shutt two-RBI double to center field. A couple of Phoenix miscues in the field led to the Aggies plating its two runs of the game in the top of the second to tie the contest at 2-2. Elon responded with a four-run bottom half of the inning beginning with a two-RBI single up the middle by Olson followed with another RBI single by Shutt through the right side. An Emily Cameron double down the left field line put the Phoenix up 6-2 at the end of the second before Elon broke the game open with five more runs in the bottom of the third, capped off from a two-run home run by Roper to set the final score, 11-2.

Inside the Box Score: Elon hit 7-for-11 (.636) with two outs…The Phoenix was also 10-for-22 (.455) with runners on and 9-for-18 (.500) with runners in scoring position…Leadoff hitters for the Phoenix were a perfect 4-for-4…Elon held the Aggies to 0-for-5 with two outs.

Notes of Interest: Today was the 14th and 12th multi hit game for Shutt and Olson, respectively…Shutt and Roper also increased the team-lead in games with multi RBI with nine each…The five RBI for Shutt is a new team single-season high this year

On Deck: The Phoenix closes out its regular-season this weekend with a Colonial Athletic Association three-game series versus UNCW beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, May 1, at 5 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday, May 2, with the Phoenix’s Senior Day as Elon will honor its six-person class of Clausen, Grace Eng, Sarah Little, Caitlin O’Shea, Aly Quintana and Chelsea White.
