Errors Costly as Elon Baseball Falls at Davidson

ELON, N.C. – Two Elon errors led to four unearned runs for Davidson as the Phoenix dropped a 6-3 contest to the Wildcats at Wilson Field on Tuesday, April 28.

The loss dropped Elon to 22-21 overall, while Davidson improved to 22-16 as the two split a home-and-home season series.

Andy Moore collected two of Elon’s five hits on the night and Joey Tomko delivered a pinch-hit, two-RBI double for the maroon and gold.

Both Ryan Lowe and Will Robertson had two hits, scored once and drove in one for the Wildcats.

Jake Stalzer (2-5) took the loss after allowing five runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings. For the second consecutive start the Phoenix lefty did not issue a walk.

Evan Roberts (2-1) threw a third of an inning to garner the win. Matt Saeta threw a perfect ninth to collect his third save.

Up next: Elon will return to CAA play by traveling to Hofstra for a three-game series that begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 1.

How it happened: Trailing 3-0, Elon tied the game on Tomko’s double and an error in the top of the seventh only to see Davidson come back with three unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Wildcats started the inning with a single before an error on a sacrifice bunt put two aboard. Once the runners had been sacrificed to second and third and then loaded with a walk, the Phoenix looked like it would get out of the jam with a grounder to second. Unfortunately for Elon, the double play was not turned and a run scored. Lee Miller then delivered two with a double to left-center.

Inside the box score: Elon was just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners on the night … Four of Davidson’s nine hits went for extra bases.

Notes: Stalzer has not allowed a walk in his last 12.2 innings over three outings … Moore has had four multi-hit games in his last six games and six in his last nine.
