• High Point scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and earn a 4-3 win over Wake Forest at home on Wednesday.
• Senior Dane McDermott drove in the winning run with an RBI single, his third hit of the day.
• Redshirt-junior Joe Goodman entered the game with two on and no outs in the ninth and got three-straight outs for the save.
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 4-3 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday night at Williard Stadium. Senior Dane McDermott drove in the winning run with a two-out RBI single, his third hit of the day.
“This team played with tremendous energy today,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “This is the way we need to play to be successful. We have to have the fortitude to play with this type of aggression. Two-out RBI win games and both Tony Fortier-Bensen and Dane McDermott had huge ones today. Andre Scrubb put us in position to win, Tyler Britton was sensational out of the bullpen and Joe Goodman showed up when we needed him most.”
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, High Point got back-to-back singles from senior Tony Fortier-Bensen and Tim Mansfield to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. McDermott then came to the plate and hit a single over the glove of the leaping WFU second baseman to score Fortier-Bensen for the go-ahead run.
The Demon Deacons put the first two runners on in the ninth, but redshirt-junior Joe Goodman came out of the bullpen to close the door. Goodman got the first out at home on grounder to third by Will Craig before striking out Justin Yurchak and getting Stuart Fairchild to fly out to right. The save was Goodman’s fourth of the season.
Junior Tyler Britton earned the win in relief for the Panthers, improving to 3-1 on the season. Britton pitched 1-1/3 scoreless innings and allowed three hits while striking out two.
Parker Dunshee dropped to 5-2 on the season after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth. Dunshee pitched one inning and allowed one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
High Point splits the home-and-home series with Wake Forest and improves to 23-21 with the win. The Demon Deacons drop to 26-21 with the loss.
One day after being shutout by the Demon Deacons, High Point got on the board quickly with a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Senior Josh Spano doubled and came around to score on an RBI single by freshman Carson Jackson.
The Panthers doubled their lead in the third with an RBI single by Fortier-Bensen to put HPU in front 2-0. Sophomore Josh Greene was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second before coming home on the Fortier-Bensen single.
Greene singlehandedly extended the High Point lead to 3-0 in the fifth, scoring a run on a play that included a stolen base and two errors. The sophomore singled to lead off the inning then stole second. The throw to second went into the outfield allowing Greene to take third and the throw to third from centerfield sailed into the dugout letting Greene trot home.
Wake Forest scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. None of the Demon Deacons’ runs were earned as HPU committed two errors in the frame. Nate Mondou reached on an error and scored the first run for WFU on an RBI double by Will Craig. The final two runs scored on a double Nick Bisplinghoff with the second coming home after an error in left by senior Cody Manzella.
Sophomore Andre Scrubb pitched well for High Point in his first start of the season. Scrubb pitched 5-1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits and four walks while striking out five.
Fortier-Bensen and McDermott both finished with three hits for the Panthers. Fortier-Bensen went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored while McDermott went 3-4 with an RBI. Greene went 1-2 with a walk and scored two of HPU’s four runs.
High Point is off this weekend and will return to action with a road game at Davidson on Wednesday, May 6, in Davidson, N.C. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
