Elon Phoenix Seeded Third for CAA Softball Championships

ELON, N.C. – The four-team field is set for the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championships as the Elon University softball team earned a No. 3 seed for the upcoming league tournament which will be held in Harrisonburg, Va., on May 6-8, at James Madison’s Veterans Memorial Park.

Elon opens the double-elimination tournament against No. 2 seed Hofstra on Wednesday, May 6, at 3 p.m. The Phoenix and the Pride follows the opening contest of the tournament, No. 1 seed JMU versus No. 4 seed Towson at noon. All four teams will compete for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The opening-round winners play at Noon on Thursday for a spot in the championship game, followed by an elimination game between the two first-round losers at 2:30 p.m. At 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, the winner of the elimination game faces the loser from the winner’s bracket contest. The conference title game, which will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network (ASN) for the first time, is set for Noon on Friday, with a second game to follow if necessary.

The Dukes, who have won 35 straight games and are currently ranked No. 19 in the latest NFCA Poll, earned the No. 1 seed thanks to a perfect 19-0 record in conference play. The Pride, who have reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last three seasons, enter the championship having won nine straight games overall. Hofstra’s only three loses in conference play came against the Dukes (twice) and Elon. Towson reaches the championship field for the third straight season

In its first year in its new league, the Phoenix earned a spot in the league championships and the No. 3 seed thanks to a sweep of in-state foe UNCW this past weekend, May 1-2. Elon, who went 30-20 in the regular-season and has its highest winning percentage since 2010 (.600), clinched the third seed behind a walk-off 4-3 win against the Seahawks in the series finale on Saturday.
