Elon Softball Duo Receives CAA Weekly Honors(Kara Shutt/Southeast Guilford HS wins again)

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Kayla Caruso and freshman Kara Shutt of the Elon University softball team were selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, as released by the league office on Monday morning, May 4.

Caruso earned her first career conference weekly award after the Kennesaw, Ga., native went 3-0 with a unblemished ERA of 0.00 in her 10.0 innings last week. She earned each of the wins in Elon’s sweep against in-state conference foe UNCW last weekend and struck out four batters with three walks. Caruso improved to 12-4 on the year with last week’s victories, the most wins an Elon pitcher has had since 2012.

Shutt received her second CAA weekly award of the year after the Greensboro, N.C., native batted 6-for-12 (.500) in the Phoenix’s 4-0 week at the plate. She also scored six runs, drove in eight RBI and had a home run and a double. Against North Carolina A&T, Shutt drove in a season-high five RBI against the Aggies while going 3-for-3 with two runs. She added another three RBI in the opening game of the Phoenix’s series versus UNCW on a home run that tied the game in the sixth inning after the Phoenix fell behind 3-0 to open the game.

Caruso shared the CAA pitching honor with Hofstra’s Taylor Pirone while Delaware’s Mariah Kondravy was also tagged as the league’s top rookie along with Shutt last week.

The Phoenix will head to its first CAA Softball Championship tournament this week as the No. 3 seed. Elon opens tournament play on Wednesday, May 6, at 3 p.m. versus No. 2 seed Hofstra in Harrisonburg, Va., at James Madison’s Veterans Memorial Park.
