Elon Baseball Falls at #22 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 22nd-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead as the Elon Phoenix dropped a 14-2 contest at UNC’s Boshamer Stadium on Wednesday night.

The loss dropped Elon to 23-24 on the year, while North Carolina improved to 31-16.

For the Phoenix, Andy Moore had a two-hit night and both Austin Leeney and Ryan Cooper drove in a run apiece.

Skye Bolt led the Tar Heels by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and a homer.

Jake Stalzer (2-6) went two innings and gave up two runs on four hits to take the loss.

The win went to Trevor Kelly (5-1) who tossed 1.1 innings out of the pen. He allowed two hits.

Up next: Elon will close out the home portion of its schedule this weekend by hosting Delaware in a three-game CAA series. The set begins with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday, May 8.

How it happened: North Carolina got a single run in both the first and second innings before putting the game out of reach in the third. The Tar Heels took advantage of four walks and a hit batter along with two hits to score six runs, pushing their advantage to 8-0.

Inside the box score: The Phoenix stranded 10 runners and was just 4-for-14 with runners on base … Both of the runs scored by Elon were unearned.

Notes: Stalzer did not issue a walk and has not walked a hitter in his last 15.0 innings pitched … Casey Jones started at DH for the first time since April 28, 2013 at Georgia Southern.
