Elon Baseball Shaves Heads to Support Vs. Cancer After Setback to Delaware

ELON, N.C. – For the fourth consecutive season, members of the Elon baseball team shaved their heads to raise money to fight childhood cancer. Elon has raised a nation’s-best $31,635 for this cause. This year’s Vs. Cancer Foundation event took place following Sunday’s 11-9 setback to Delaware.

Elon fell to 24-26 overall on the season and 13-11 in league play. Delaware improved to 21-21, 9-12.

The top three hitters in the Phoenix lineup – Quinn Bower, Casey Jones and Ryan Cooper – all had two-hit days, as did Andy Moore and Kory Shumate. Jones hit his sixth home run of the season, scored three times and drove in two.

Joe Giacchino and Zach Lopes combined to go 8-for-12 with four runs scored and five RBI to lead the Blue Hens.

Elon starter Jake Stalzer (2-7) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.

Kevin Milley (4-3) picked up the win as he gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. Luke Alicknavitch got the final out to earn his seventh save of the year.

Up next: Elon will wrap up the regular season with a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, May 10 at East Carolina.

How it happened: Delaware scored in eight of its nine innings, including two in the first as both Lopes and Norm Donkin notched RBI. The Blue Hens consistently fought off Elon comeback attempts. After the Phoenix made it a 6-5 game in the last of the sixth, Delaware got a leadoff homer from Calvin Scott to start the seventh.

Inside the box score: Six of Elon’s 12 hits came with two outs … Jones’ homer came in his final at bat at Latham Park … Delaware turned four double plays in the game.

Notes: Stalzer had his streak of innings pitched without issuing a walk snapped at 17.1 … Elon will finish either third or fourth in its first season in the CAA.
