Dan Jennings(Greensboro Bat) to manage Miami Marlins

*****We have spoken to Dan Jennings on several occasions and he always proved to be a fair and friendly individual….He has made many stops at the Greensboro Grasshoppers facility(NewBridge Bank Park) over the years and was a member of the Greensboro Bats baseball team for a brief period of time back in the 80’s….*****

Undrafted out of college, Jennings(pitcher) tried out for the New York Yankees in 1984, who signed him. He appeared in spring training for the Greensboro Bats, the Yankees’ Class A affiliate.

Daniel Jennings is the general manager and manager of the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He served as a scout in MLB beginning in 1986.

Playing career
Jennings attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he played college baseball for the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. He graduated from William Carey College in 1984.

Undrafted out of college, Jennings tried out for the New York Yankees in 1984, who signed him. He appeared in spring training for the Greensboro Bats, the Yankees’ Class A affiliate.

Coaching and executive career
Jennings coached the baseball team at Davidson High School in Mobile Alabama. Jennings became an associate scout for the Cincinnati Reds in 1986, and an area scout for the Seattle Mariners in 1988. The Mariners promoted him to crosschecker in 1995, and he accepted a job with the Tampa Bay Rays as their scouting director later that year.

Jennings joined the Marlins as Vice President of Player Personnel in 2002. He was named the Marlins’ assistant general manager in September 2007. At the end of the 2013 season, the Marlins promoted Michael Hill to president and Jennings to general manager. At one point, one of the members of the Marlins was named Dan Jennings. They are not related.

Following the firing of Marlins manager Mike Redmond on May 17, 2015, Jennings was named as the new Marlins manager on May 18, 2015.

  1. Interesting note here on the hiring of Dan Jennings:

    Former players have become first-time managers in the majors, but the move from the front office to the dugout is unusual.

    According to Baseball Reference, Jennings is the first major league skipper with no experience as a manager or big league player since Braves owner Ted Turner managed his team for one game in 1977.

    Jennings’ only coaching experience was in high school in Mobile, Alabama, in the 1980s.
