HPU Women’s Track and Cross Country Honored with NCAA Public Recognition Award

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s cross country and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field programs were honored Wednesday with prestigious NCAA Public Recognition Awards.

The annual accolades are given to an NCAA athletics program that posts a single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) that ranks in the top 10 percent of its sport.

At least one High Point University athletics team has been honored with an NCAA Public Recognition Award in each of the past seven years, marking the longest active streak of any institution in the Big South Conference.

“I’d like to congratulate our High Point University women’s cross country and track & field programs on this extraordinary accomplishment,” athletic director Dan Hauser said. “Academic performance is a critical part of our athletic department mission at HPU. Over the past two years, our student-athletes have posted record numbers for Millis Scholar-Athletes, combined GPA and APR scores. I look forward to seeing those records continue to be broken in the coming semesters.”

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR (the most recent APRs are based on scores from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years).

This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. By measuring eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of academic performance in each sport.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams will be announced on May 27.
