The 2011 News and Record All Guilford Girls Basketball teams have set the pace for being a quality student athlete that have stayed the course and graduated. They have displayed the type of character and discipline that will aide them as they pursue their future careers. A few commonalities that all of them had were they were all very strong academically and they did it at the school they committed to and were never a problem on or off the court. All had to endure either a few coaches and player changes or personal injuries, yet they never allowed either to knock them off of the ultimate goal of getting their diploma.They were very solid basketball players as well as student athletes in high school and they transferred that skill check and desire to their institutions of choice.They became more than just basketball players at their respective institutions.They displayed the type of leadership and personal skills that endeared them to the student body and the surrounding local communities. Many played their careers locally while a couple traveled to Virginia and all the way to New York.We honor and salute each and everyone one of them for setting the proper example of being a committed and a dedicated Student Athlete to higher learning.

Miranda Jenkins: Eastern Guilford/Stony Brook University

The Eastern Guilford Wildcat alumnus was News & Records,Burlington Times, Greensborosports and Conference Player of the Year. Eastern’s MVP, Conference Tournament MVP, First Team All State and left with 3 Conference Regular season Championships,Two Conference Tournament Championships and Three State Tournament Sectional Championship appearances. She helped to will a young inexperienced team to a 23-6 record and a Conference Tournament Championship win over Northern Guilford (the regular season champs) with an electrifying performance of 37 points in a double overtime upset. She finished in the top 3% in her graduating class. She left as Eastern’s third all time leading scorer with 1880 points,set a school record with 607 assists and pulled down 637 rebounds.The first player in Guilford County public schools history to score over 1500 points,500 assists and 500 rebounds.The Eastern Wildcat was not a starter until the 16th game of her freshmen year. She accepted a scholarship to Stony Brook University in Long Island,New York (which is considered one of the best academic schools in the world according to many of the latest publications) mentally prepared to handle the ups and downs of life. She had loss her brother Jeremiah Jenkins who made News & Records First Team,Conference Player of the Year and First Team All Region in 2006 to an automobile accident in 2010. The original coaches that recruited her were no longer there and she was introduced to newly hired Head Coach Beth O’boyle whom made a special trip to Greensboro to make sure that she was still going to attend because several Universities across the Nation were calling inquiring about her availability.In the first scrimmage against another college opponent she tore her ACL and was out for the whole season after earning a starting position.She was redshirted but traveled with the team throughout the season.The team went 4-26 and was 1-15 in conference play and finished last.They ended the season on a 16 game losing streak.The next season she played sparingly (37 minutes) while still recovering and the team went 14-16 and 6-10 in the conference for a fourth place finish.The following year and nearly fully recovered she earn the starting position and team went 24-9 and 13-3 in conference play and finish second and loss to Albany in the Conference Tournament Championship game and had the greatest turnaround ( 20 win increase over a two year period) in Division One Women’s Basketball history according to the NCAA.The 24 wins were a school record. She was awarded the “Coaches Award” and also a member of the Dean’s List. Unfortunately she tore her other knee in the Conference SemiFinals as the team was selected to play in the WNIT and was unable to play in the Conference Championship game;They had snapped Albany 38 game conference winning streak during the regular season. As she continued to rehab during the off season their Head Coach whom had directed them to a place in the NCAA history books took another job at VCU. The team finished 17-14 and 10-6 in conference play which was good for 3rd place and a CBI bid which they loss to Sienna under their new Head Coach Caroline McCombs.The Eastern Guilford graduated this Spring and was asked back for another year to complete her Masters. Stony Brook has a long list of Academic Excellence by its student athletes with 13 of 15 Women Basketball players making the Honor Roll in 2014 and 5 graduating. She was selected to speak at the Grand Opening of Stony Brook’s new 21 million dollar State of the Art Long Island Credit Union Arena last Fall. Stony Brook Basketball team was recently awarded the NCAA Public Recognition Award for finishing in the top 10% of their sport for Academic Progress Rate (APR) She recently Directed,Edited and Produced a documentary for a student athlete whom received the Courage Award who loss her mom to Cancer.The Documentary was shown at the Awards banquet. She was selected to be the presenter of this award. Majoring in Film,Theater Arts and Business.The documentary could not have been more appropriate and well timed and has received rave reviews.

Samantha Cofer: Northern Guilford/Elon University

The KnightHawk alumnus was a First Team All Guilford, All Conference, All State performer that helped Northern Guilford to a Regular season Conference Championship during her senior year.She produced 22 points in the Conference Championship loss to Eastern Guilford in double overtime. She left as Northern Guilford’s all time leading scorer with 1812 points. She was a four year starter and All Conference player. Most Valuable Player and MVP of the 2010 Conference Tournament. Made the All Pizza Hut team two years in a row. Finished in the top 3% of her schools graduating class. She played in the North and South All Star game and winning the three point shooting contest. She accepted a scholarship offer from Elon University under then Head Coach Karen Barefoot whom left that Spring to join Old Dominion. She started and was surrounded with great talented teammates in Kelsey Evans, Lei Lei Hairston and Ali Ford. She was able to give them another option of a post player that could shoot outside.The team went 15/16 and 10/8 in conference play during her Freshmen year under new Head Coach Charlotte Smith. They rose to 19/14 and 14/6 in conference the next year. The following year they went 16/14 and 12/8 in conference play before exiting the Southern Conference for the Colonial Athletic Association.The team finished on a high note by going 19/13 and 11/7 in conference play before losing to James Madison. The addition of such young stars as Shay Burnett help to secure a strong finish.They were invited to the WNIT before losing to Georgia Tech.She has maintain Academic Excellence throughout her career and has demonstrated what a student athlete should be. She has made herself visible in the community by helping out with specific groups.The Biochemistry major has demonstrated what it’s going to take to handle her profession once the ball stops bouncing.The Elon star was fortunate to make it through injury free in her career. Elon is a high ranking academic school that provides a top quality level of education. She recently received the Coaches Award. She has been a member of the Dean’s List at Elon University. She has a sister Amanda Coffer that plays for Campbell University.

Kiera McIvor: Dudley/Radford University

The former Panther came out of Junior High as one of the most heralded players to ever enter the high school ranks. She had exemplified the type of skill set that had coaches around the area wanting her services. She had earn the best player award at a Virginia AAU camp that featured the likes of Cierra Burdick who just finished her career at the University of Tennessee. A great article was written in the News & Records documenting her accomplishments on the AAU circuit with the Gators organization. She made her decision to attend Dudley Senior High Academy that had one of the best freshmen class ever to attend a public school at one time. She was an All Conference player her senior year.That class included the likes of Desiree Drayton, Phoenix Mcgee and Chelle Jackson. That crew played on occasions but it was there Sophomore year with the likes of HelenTerry and Breonna Patterson that won the State Title. Kierra had gotten hurt during the year and was not able to finish out the year. During her senior year as a starter she had her best year and post a career high of 25 against Grimsley. The Academic gifted student always kept her academics on par for the bigger picture. She was offered a scholarship during an AAU game while playing for the Lady Phoenix during a Boo Williams Event going into her senior year. She was and All Conference and Honorable Mention performer during her senior year. While at Radford University she did not get to play immediately but was ready when called upon. Over the last two years as a starter she has played quite a bit of minutes.The Honor Student always kept a positive attitude despite the Coaches changes and stuck it out during times of uncertainty.This past season the team had one of its best years and finished 17-14 and 14-6 in conference play. Good for second place.They got invited to the WNIT and loss to East Carolina in the opening round.She was an All Academic Honoree for two consecutive years.The Psychology major has done all the rights things on and off the court and has done many things in representing Radford University. She is the Student Athlete representative for Radford board concerning the Big South. She is a member of the Dean’s List at Radford University.

Megan Buckland: Bishop Mcguinness/UNC

Megan Buckland has had a series of bad breaks at UNC concerning knee problems. It has curtail her growth at the collegiate level. The Former Bishop star has been granted medical redshirts. She was one of the key cogs in Bishops consecutive State Title Championships.They amass something that will never be duplicated in the State. The All Stater and Former McDonald All American nominee has done her best to continue to rehab and prepare for a final year. She graduate this year with her 2011 class and have the extra year due to the redshirt. She was a News & Records First Team and All State performer. She was selected for the East/West All Star game. She continues to be a model student athlete like she displayed while in high school on the grounds at Chapel Hill. She was a member on the National Honor Society and Christian Athletes. She has not had the opportunity to play a significant role in Carolina Basketball success due to injuries and the enormous amount of McDonald All Americans that they bring in each year. She got invited to try out for the Olympic National Team for 18 and under. She finished in the top 10% of her graduating class at Bishop.

Brittany Drew: Page/Guilford College

The Page Alumnus has been more than a pleasant surprise for Guilford College Women’s Basketball Program. Her stellar play has help to make Guilford College a sure in for post season play every year. Her ability to knock down the three pointers opened things up to give Coach Flamini more options. Her play on the court was not the only thing that had great importance. She kept high standards with her Academic excellence that she displayed at Page High school. She was a second team All ODAC performer. The four time All Academic performer at Page made several Honor Rolls at Guilford College.She was a good leader at Page while future young Super Star Paris Kea was garnishing most of the headlines.She finished in the top 10% of her graduating class.Her 13.5 points per game her senior year was her best with a high of 25 against Whitney Knight’s Team.The Health Science major has shown the maturity and patience it takes to move into the professional world of business.She was an All Conference selection and Honorable Mention All Area. She has worked serving several non profit organizations in the area. She was a part of North Carolina First National AAU Title team that won it while playing for the Greensboro Galaxy in 2009 Coached by Ursula Williams and John Newman in Kingsport, Tennessee.
