The show goes on the road tonight and gets rained out not once, but twice:HS football and Legion baseball on the menu

On the road to Northeast Guilford High School tonight to check out Spring football practice and then over to Page High School, for the American Legion baseball game…

When I got out to NEG they were still practicing, but the threat of lightning was on the way in and they had to call off the rest of today’s workout, with about a good thirty minutes still on the clock…

At Page the rain and lightning hit in the 4th inning with Mooresville in front of the Cone Mills American Legion baseball team, 4-1…4-1 in the fourth and Cone Mills had been on top of Mooresville early behind doubles from Troy Lake and Jalen Surgeon, but by the top of the 4th frame, Mooresville had moved ahead in the game…

Mot sure of the final verdict or outcome at Page, with Cone Mills and Mooresville and we will have to dig around and find out if they ever got it going again tonight….Cone Mills plans on being downtown at Memorial Stadium for games next Monday and Tuesday, so come on out and support the return of American Legion baseball to Greensboro….

Coach Jason Lippard is back in Greensboro and he returns to Guilford County proper, after being over at Greensboro College with the Pride, back in his college days…

Coach Lippard is the first-year head football coach for the Northeast Guilford Rams and he is looking to lead the Rams back toward higher ground…

The Rams have suffered in recent seasons and Coach Lippard is hoping he can begin to turn this thing around at NEG and that his kids can re-gain their confidence and that will come within a winning football program…Funny about football, baseball and other sports, they never ask you at the end of the night who lost the game, they want to know who won the game and Coach Lippard, along with Coach Suggs and the other NEG Ram assistants, are working to restore that winning attitude on Hicone Road ,at Northeast Guilford High School….

Coach Lippard says they have tons of speed and they plan to run a wide-open spread offenses at NEG this year to utilize that team speed on offense…NEG will be making some changes like NWG did when Coach Rolfes came in for Coach Woodruff, last season…

NEG will go with the 3-5 defense and they plan to completely cover the middle of the field with those five linebackers and they don’t have anyone like the McNeil kid from a year or so back, but they do have kids that can cover some ground….

Separate starters on both sides of the line, with a set group of offensive line starters and set group of defensive line starters and nobody looking to go both ways on the line and as far as platooning at the rest of the positions, we will have to wait and see…Might be some cases where they have to get the very best skilled athletes on the field on all occasions…We will see as we move further along with the off-season practices….

When August hits game one will be versus WS Parkland and then game two will be an away game at High Point Central, on a Thursday night…They both are going to be big, but that Central game is a real stern challenge with of the backs that Central can urn at you….

Part of the word and work for the day at Northeast Guilford with new Rams’ head coach Jason Lippard…

Hope to catch up with these guys again soon…..

  1. We have a ton of speed so we are going to run spread. What these Head coaches forget at these schools is the LINEMEN! There is a reason why NEG and NWG ran Triple and Wing T all those years. I remember watching NW and NE some years ago and they had a couple linemen that were under 200 pounds. Good luck Zone blocking a 300 pound DT with a 195 pound guard.

  2. Agreed that you work with what you got….but if all you have is 200 pound linemen how is it smart to install a system that relies on power from the Oline to move people?

  3. Saw some of the NEG linemen yesterday and they have at least one who is 300-plus and most are in the 250-260 range…

They had one smaller one and he was 220 pounds…

  4. Give me a 195 lb stud that is strong and uses technique any day over a 300 lb “puddin”.

  5. The key is to sustain the block and to keep on doing it the same way over and over and over again…Make the contact and stay on/sustain the block until right after the whistle blows to stop the play….

If I was teaching blocking today I would tell the kids to give me three complete/solid months of work in the weight room for the Summer and then when we hit practice we work on hit the block and sustain it and don’t stop or come off of it until the play is over and block up field and also carry out blocks on the off side, if the play is not on your side of the field or line….

Blocks are available everywhere and you have to hit and keep it up…You upset and throw off a lot of people on the other side of the line if you hit your blocks and sustain/maintain them….Upper body strength is a real plus/asset and once you get your forearms inside of the defender you can move him all over the field…

I can talk about this blocking all day long and it is not a fabricated discussion….Blocking used to be my full time job and although it was not glorious, it did lead to some success and it can make a huge difference in the success of your team….

Blocking 101….A boring class, but very important if you wnat to control the offensvie line….I would have liked to have been given a shot at blocking back, but never got that chance….To get a good running start and then make a block is like taking off a nice jail-break…..

Better get out of here before I have a major mental block/break….

  6. 195lb kids on the line might work in 3A Football but that ain’t going to get in done in 4AA. Where Mallard Creek butler and a few others have 300 pound studs.
