HiToms Fall 3-2 Against Edenton Steamers

HiToms fall in pitchers duel 3-2 to the Edenton Steamers

THOMASVILLE, NC, – At the end of a hard fought battle the HiToms (2-5) fall to the Steamers (6-2) 3-2.

No runs would come about for either team until the sixth inning when Julian Russel (Chicago State) would score on a fielders choice by Cole Gruber (Nebraska-Omaha) to give the Edenton Steamers the first lead of the ball game.

Going to the top of the seventh with a 1-0 lead, Hunter Newman (Trevecca Nazarene) would lead off with a double. With an 0-2 count Demetre Taylor (Eastern Illinois) would take a pitch from Austin Gardner (University of Texas at Arlington) and send it over the wall of right-center field for a two run homerun. This would boost the lead to 3-0 in favor of Edenton.

The HiToms would start the comeback in the bottom of the eighth with a base hit from David Newcomer (Lenoir-Ryhne) and back to back walks for Ryan Hedrick (Presbyterian College) and Chandler Hall (Louisiana Tech) to load the bases. Peter Johnson (Presbyterian College) would hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Newcomer to start the scoring. Trailing 3-1, Kody Ruedisili (Wofford) would single through the left side to score Hedrick. However, trail runner Hall would be thrown out at the plate for the finial out of the inning.

The top of the ninth the HiToms would send three arms to the mound as situational matchups. Chase Gulzow (Nebraska-Kearney), Levi Gesell (Pitt CC), and Mason Klotz (Southeastern Louisiana) would combine to toss a scoreless ninth.

With runners on first and second with one out, in the bottom of the ninth, the HiToms could not push the tying run across the plate to extend the game.

HiToms will be back in action tomorrow night on the road against the Martinsville Mustangs at 7:17 p.m. and then back at Finch Field on Friday to face the Forest City Owls for super hero for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
