ZEBULON — Scott McKeon’s two-run triple in the sixth inning lifted the Wildcats of Raleigh Millbrook to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Charlotte Providence on Friday night in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

Andrew Strickland and Alex Royalty singled in front of McKeon’s key hit, his second hit of the night. Royalty got the save in the seventh in relief of winning pitcher Reid Herring, who struck out three and walked four in six and one-third innings of work.

Royalty also had two hits and two runs batted in for the winners and Basil Rodts had two hits. Andrew Moritz was two for four for Providence, including a homer.

Millbrook is making its first visit to the NCHSAA baseball championship series and has been a great playoff story, as the Wildcats were the 21st seed in the Eastern bracket. Millbrook is 21-10 overall while Providence, in its third trip to the championship series, fell to 29-4.

Game two of the best-of-three is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. This is the 99th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA. The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance serves as a host city sponsor for the championship.
