NCHSAA Class 1-A Softball – Game One: Shope Fires One-Hit Shutout As Hiwassee Dam Wins 7-0

GREENSBORO — Haylie Shope fired a one-hit shutout and Hiwassee Dam jumped in front early en route to a 7-0 win on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A softball championship series at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

Shope fanned nine and walked five, and had a no-hitter until the sixth when Alyssa Santos singled. North Duplin loaded the bases in the sixth but failed to score.

Morgan Helton led the offensive assault with four hits in five trips, as the Eagles scored their seven runs in the first three innings. Shope helped her own cause with two hits and two RBI and Macy Sena also had two hits.

North Duplin’s Rylee Pate, who struck out 12 after settling down, got the loss, her third against 14 wins. .

Both teams are in their initial appearance in an NCHSAA state softball championship. Hiwassee Dam is 25-3 overall and North Duplin 18-4-1.

Game two in the best of three series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., with a third game if necessary to follow Saturday at 5 p.m.
