Trevor Gay Paves the Way for HiToms 10-3 Victory
FINCH FIELD, NC, – After three hours of baseball, the HiToms (4-7) managed to score a season high ten runs off eleven Hits for a 10-3 victory over the Asheboro Copperheads (6-4).
After a scoreless first and second inning, Asheboro started the scoring with a lone run in the top of the third. Avery Jackson (Appalachian State) reached third on an outfield error to get into scoring position. Skyler Geissinger (SIU Edwardsville) singled to plate the run Jackson.
In the bottom of the third the HiToms would respond to take the lead, which they would not relinquish. Jake Maziar (Chattahoochee Valley CC) hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Nick Lopez (Creighton) to knot the score up at one apiece. Drew Ellis (Louisville) scored the second run off of a Daniel Millwee (University of Arizona) double into center field. After three complete the HiToms led 2-1.
The HiToms offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, three in the bottom of the fifth and one more run to top it all off in the bottom of the seventh to finish off their scoring. Asheboro tried to respond but only plated one run in the top of the eighth.
On the hill today for the HiToms Trevor Gay (1-1) (UNC Charlotte) got his second quality start of the season. The freshman, and former Post 87 HiTom, worked six solid innings while allowing two unearned runs and striking out four. Chayse Gulzow (Nebraska-Kearney) would relieve Gay and throw two innings within giving up a lone hit and earned run. Mason Klotz (Southeastern Louisiana) would be the final HiTom pitcher and would throw a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the victory for the home standing High Point-Thomasville HiToms.
After being asked about today, head coach Brian Rountree responded. “They say one day at a time. The thing we were able to do was get hits with runners in scoring position. Once they scored in the third inning the thing we had to do was answer. It’s important to, even if they had scored three runs, answer with at least one run because it’s a momentum thing. Baseball is a game of momentum.”
The HiToms are home again tomorrow night (6/8) for “Bark in the Park”, as the HiToms face off against the Gastonia Grizzlies (5-4). Bring your furry friend and receive a free HiToms bandana for your dog. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and gates open at 6:00 p.m.
