HPU Draws UAB and Georgia Tech in Cancun Women’s Basketball Challenge

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team will play UAB and Georgia Tech in the 2015 Cancun Challenge, tournament officials announced on Tuesday.

The Panthers will kick off the Riviera Tournament on Thursday, November 26 at 4 p.m. against UAB. The Purple & White then takes on the Yellow Jackets at 6:30 p.m. the following day.

The tournament will take place in the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya near Cancun, Mexico from Nov. 26-28. High Point will compete in the Riviera Tournament along with Georgia Tech, UAB, Northern Iowa, N.C. State and Seton Hall. Meanwhile, Duke, Idaho, Iowa State and Texas State will take part in the Mayan Tournament during the three days.

The Cancun Challenge is one of the top basketball events held each year and was rated as a top-five preseason tournament by Sports Illustrated in 2014. Teams stay and play at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. The resort’s convention center ballroom is converted into an arena, which provides fans a special close-up view of the games. Once arriving to the hotel, teams and fans are treated to a spectacular all-inclusive rock star vacation with games, practices, unlimited dining and drinks, world-class entertainment and fun all in one location.
