GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s David Cason was named to the NCAA Division III Capital One Academic All-District© V Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He received the same recognition in 2013 and is now eligible for selection to CoSIDA’s NCAA Division III Capital One Academic All-America© Team, which will be announced later this month.
Cason completed his final season with the Quakers’ track team as a distance runner last month. He earned Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognition by virtue of his second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the league championships. He came home third in the 5,000 in 15:30.55, which earned third-team all-league honors. Cason turned in the Quakers’ top steeplechase time of the season (9:28.46), which ranked second in the league and 50th in NCAA Division III this year. It is also seventh-fastest in Guilford history. He clocked the team’s fourth-fastest times in the 1,500 (4:10.52) and the 5,000 (15:30.05), both of which stood among the ODAC’s 15-best times in 2015.
The ODAC’s 2015 Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Cason earned 10 All-ODAC commendations in his collegiate running career. He was a three-time All-ODAC cross country honoree and twice earned all-league indoor track and field recognition. Cason reached the podium in five ODAC outdoor track and field championship events. He placed no lower than second in four steeplechase races at the annual league meet and won the 2012 contest. He graduates with the ODAC and Guilford steeplechase standards (9:15.34, set in 2013), and ran on Guilford’s school-record setting indoor teams in the 4×400 and distance medley relay. Cason has fourth-best outdoor mile time (4:25.17) in Quakers’ history, as well as the fourth-best indoor efforts in the mile (4:27.76) and 3,000 (8:50.87). He has run seven of the school’s eight-fastest steeplechase times.
Cason graduated from Guilford with high honors and his degree in biology and health sciences in 2014. He took classes at the school in the spring of 2015 that prepared him for classes this fall at the Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Cason was a four-time Academic All-ODAC honoree and regular on Guilford’s dean’s list. He won numerous academic awards, including the prestigious Dana Scholarship.
