Rolling with some of the coaching and football news coming out of the Weekend Huddles:Will Dillard hoops offer to Wake Forest

>*****Just received news that Will Dillard(Greensboro Day School) got a basketball scholarship offer from Wake Forest today…Good job and congrats to Will and I bet Reggie Dillard is proud of his little brother…Good kid and a good family….*****

Just a few of the news notes that we are bringing home for the weekend after the football games that we have attended….

Saw him over at Guilford College for the 7 on 7’s today…Damon Coiro, the former head coach at Grimsley, is now the runningbacks coach at Northern Guilford…Coach Coiro back in from New Jersey and he also played college football at Greensboro College…A good young man and coach…

First time in a long time, former Greensboro College head coach Neal Mitchell not with the Grimsley Whirlies this year..Did see Coach Mitchell up in the stands today at Guilford…A good man…

Former Kernodle Cougars’ coach Quincy Bell is now with the Grimsley Whirlies as their runningbacks coach…Coach Bell was an assistant coach out at Northeast Guilford last season and was also the Ram’s JV Football coach…Still teaches at Kernodle Middle…A good man and now working for a good man, Coach Pat Neal…

Several new coaches around and about out there too, and we heard earlier this week that former Page Pirate head coach and Northeast Guilford assistant coach Bob Via, is now the head football coach down at Pender County…A good man and hate to see him leave our area, but hope he does well down East….

Saw current Page Pirate defensive coach Norman Weeks at Guilford College today and we shared some war stories and he told me this 7 on 7 football might be the football of the future, with less chance of concussions in this style of play for the future….He also told me that former Pirate John Spain will coaching linebackers at Page this upcoming season…John Spain had an outstanding football career at LB for the Elon Phoenix….Coach Weeks a good man and John Spain, a good young man…

If you gave me Diondre Overton(Page), Jeremiah Brown(Southwest Guilford) and Tucker Hord(Northern Guilford) and we rolled those three into one receiver, I would give you one of the Top Five high school receivers in the nation….The skills of those three combined are that good…Saw Hord today and that kid will blow you away with his ability to go up in traffic and catch the ball…The kid can pull it out of crowd as good anybody I have seen in a long time…Haven’t seen Overton and Brown yet this off-season, but I know what they can do….

Good to see Coach Tommy Norwood and his son Ty over Guilford today too, still representing the White and Blue, of the Ragsdale Tigers…

The former Guilford College Quaker wide receiver Johnny Roscoe back home at Guilford College today representing his Northern Guilford Nighthawks…

Ran into one of the Brunner Brothers tonight up at Mrs. Winners on Battleground and the junior Brunner was telling me about his brother Devin and cousin Josh Pittman and many basketball players from the past from around this area…We talked about them all, Will Graves, PJ Hairston, Norman Carter, Shelton Carter, Carlton Griffin, Donald Moore Jr., John Brown from HPU, Josh Chavis, Julius Brooks, Marty Summers, Kenny from Hampton and Spring Valley Parks, Rusty Lee, and Mr. Brunner had nothing but good things to say about Mr. Lee, the AD at Page and the job he has done over the years, we talked about Josh King, Eric Hicks, Jim Modlin, Little Ty Graves bouncing a ball with both hands at the age of three, Kevin Graves, Jalen Seegars, Rocky Manning and many more on the trip down the local basketball memory lane with Mr. Brunner tonight at Mrs. Winners on Battleground Avenue…Brunner, a good young man who attended both Page and Western Guilford and went on to finish at GTCC with his GED…A good young man…..

  1. from down in Charlotte at Olympic High School:

Tommy Knotts made a successful homecoming of sorts to Charlotte … even if it wasn’t leading one of Mecklenburg County’s high school football teams.

Knotts saw his Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork High squad complete an undefeated run through the Cam Newton Foundation 7-on-7 tournament by winning the championship game Friday at Olympic High School.

The Silver Foxes, who have played for the South Carolina 4A-Division I title the past three seasons, beat Fort Mill’s Nation Ford High 20-12 for the title, earning the program $2,500.
