Greensboro Galaxy 14U Girls Basketball Team Wins 2015 National Travel Basketball Association (NTBA) National Championship Title

Myrtle Beach, SC – Greensboro’s very own Greensboro Galaxy 14U Girls Basketball Team won a national tournament at the National Travel Ball Association (NTBA) Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC June 25-28, 2015. Under the leadership of Greensboro Galaxy’s President Rodney Westmoreland, Director of Women’s Basketball Walter Johnson, Coach Eric Burns, and Coach Dexter Vines, these young ladies were assembled together from Triad Area schools ranging from Southeast Middle, Northeast Middle, Southern Middle, Aycock Middle, Triad Math and Science, Canterbury School, Western Alamance Middle, and Woodlawn Middle (Burlington). In just the first travel ball season together, these young ladies have claimed the 2015 14U USSSA State Championship Title and now the 2015 NTBA National Title. Not only are they talented on the court, they are also honor roll students in the classroom with the team GPA of a 3.6.

Galaxy’s Director of Women’s Basketball Walter Johnson said, “We are extremely pleased with the progress these young ladies have made in such a short period of time. Winning a state title and national championship in a first-time appearance is a huge accomplishment. Our coaches and the team have worked very hard and we see promising futures for these student-athletes.”

Greensboro Galaxy Organization is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization with a focus on the holistic development of young people between the ages of 9-17. The program encompasses physical, spiritual, educational and character development through a variety of activities and a curriculum that emphasizes diversity. The Greensboro Galaxy Youth Development Program mission is improving the lives of school age children through the promotion of healthy development of children and youth by championing the principles and practices of youth development, and by serving the families of North Carolina.

Greensboro Galaxy operates a boys and girls travel basketball program from November to August to serve underserved populations in the Guilford County area. Walter Johnson says, “Historically, we have accepted kids of all ethnic backgrounds who have either been omitted from other programs because of a perceived lack of skill or ability or because they don’t have the money to participate.” The coaches are volunteers who dedicate numerous hours to the development of youth.

  1. They have had a lot of great players that have come out of that program. I can remember not so long ago that they won a National Championship from reading it in the papers. I forgot what year it was. They also I believe had some girls from that team that went on to play in college.

  2. @Teresa that was 2007 when they won the 13U AAU Division 2 National Championship (went undefeated) under the coaching of Ursula Wiliams, Termaine Dumas and John Newman.

The players on that team were Brittany Drew, Desiree Drayton, Miranda Jenkins, Khadejah Wilkerson, Brooklyn Davis, LeAndra Davis, Precious Tonkins, and Haley Newman.

Drew, Drayton, Jenkins and Wilkerson did all play college basketball; Jenkins has one more year of eligibility and will begin her graduate degree this year. Most importantly all the players went to college and everyone has earned their undergraduate degree and two more will complete within in the next year.

A great group of players, parents and coaches.

  3. Its nice to see kids not only play ball but have great academics as well. It was nice to see that they won a National Championship in 2007. Keep up the great work girls and a tribute to your organization.

  4. Congrats to everyone who made this possible. This is big considering there are a lot of other really good teams in this area alone.Did you see that team GPA? I am so proud of these girls talent along with the book smarts.

  5. HI can we not list the names & school of the current
