FINCH FIELD, NC, July 17 – In a nail biter that screamed, “extra innings”, the HiToms (21-20) were able to ride the backs of Glenn Batson (Clemson) and Sam Roberson (Southeastern Louisiana) to beat the Martinsville Mustangs (16-24), 4-2.
The first five innings were fairly quiet and one sided thanks to two lone runs by the HiToms. However, in the top of the sixth and eighth the Mustangs hit solo home runs to tie the game at 2 a piece.
At this point it looked inevitable that extra innings would be needed. However, in the bottom of the eighth with two outs Glenn Batson and Sam Roberson hit back-to-back solo home runs to give the lead back to the Tommies, which they were able to hold onto.
The series continues tomorrow in Martinsville as the two teams play again for the seventh time this season.
