Wake Forest Alumni Webb Simpson and Bill Haas Highlight Early Wyndham Championship Commitments; Demon Deacon Coach Will Also Play

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest alumni Webb Simpson and Bill Haas will play in next month’s Wyndham Championship along with the Wake Forest University golf coach, Jerry Haas, the tournament announced today. The 76th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 17-23, 2015 at Sedgefield Country Club.

Simpson, who captured his first-career PGA TOUR victory at the Wyndham Championship in 2011, is currently 48th in FedExCup points and 46th in the Official World Golf Rankings. The 2012 U.S. Open champion hasn’t won this season, but he finished tied for second at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, fourth early in the season in the Shriners Hospital for Children Open and tied for seventh at both the Humana Championship and the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship. The Raleigh native will be making his seventh-consecutive Wyndham Championship appearance; he finished tied for fifth last year.

Haas finished tied for second at last year’s 75th anniversary Wyndham Championship finishing one stroke behind winner Camilo Villegas. The 2011 FedExCup champion won the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation earlier this year; it was his sixth PGA TOUR victory. Haas made his first PGA TOUR start at the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event in 2002 when he was still in school at Wake Forest. Since then, Haas has played the Wyndham in each of the last nine years. He is 26th in the current FedExCup point standings and 29th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Haas’ uncle, Jerry, who is also the Wake Forest University men’s golf coach, will play the Wyndham Championship this year as the Carolinas PGA Section champion. It will be his fourth appearance in the tournament.

“The Wyndham Championship field generally starts taking shape around the middle of July after the Open Championship, and it’s great to have these three Wake Forest guys in the field,” Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil said. “With Webb and Bill, we have a U.S. Open champion and a FedExCup champion – that’s a pretty solid way to start our field announcements, and congratulations to Coach Haas on his championship; we look forward to having him with us next month. I think we could have a strong field this year, but we’ll have to wait and see how it all develops in the next few weeks.”
