East edges out West in 67th Annual NCCA East-West All Star Game-(Wyatt Smith Reporting)

High Point Central quarterback Jamiel Mack was the North Carolina Coach’s Association, West All Star’s lead offensive producer, as the East All Stars took a 27-13 win at Grimsley High School’s Jamieson Stadium on Wednesday night. Central’s Mack, who postgame promised he would be playing quarterback in college when we see him again, threw for 90 total yards on 18 attempts. Mack had 8 completions, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

The 67th annual match-up featured the state’s premiere high school gridiron athletes in what is a mid-summer sports staple at Jamieson. The 8,114 spectators in attendance watched an uneventful first quarter that ended in a 0-0 tie, resulting in part from a Jamiel Mack interception.

The scoring began at 7:18 of the second quarter with an 11-play, 77-yard drive that culminated in a Statue- of- Liberty hand-off to Kedlin Huntly from West Forsyth, who ran one yard for the TD. The extra point pass attempt was no good.

The East came hurtling back 33 seconds before halftime when Eric Hoy caught an 8-yard pass from Orange County High School’s Garrett Cloer, capping off a 13 play, 73-yard drive downfield to bring the score to even before the half. Eric Hoy’s point-after kick was blocked, and the two teams went to the locker room notched at 6 points each.

Following a fireworks and cheer-leading show at halftime, Eric Hoy once again caught a pass from quarterback Cloer to score on the opening drive of the half. The East took only a little more than 2 minutes to go 74-yards on 7 plays. Brandon Greene’s point-after kick was good, taking the team to a 13-7 lead over the West.

The East’s quarterback Ge’Dari Liverman, of Northeastern High School, scored on a spectacular 80-yd run with 3:58 left in the 3rd quarter. Brandon Greene’s kick for the extra point was again successful, and the East took a 20-6 lead.

Entering the fourth quarter, the East seemed to dominate, especially after Liverman threw to Matthew Boykin for a 21-yard touchdown on a reverse play. The touchdown came with 3:21 left in the game. Brandon Greene once again added the extra point kick, and the score was 27-6. It should be noted that both punters, Brandon Greene from the East, and Skylar Matheson of the West, kept the opposing team in the backfield, averaging 41.7 yards and 40.8 yards respectively.

Jamiel Mack and the West offense showed perseverance as they scored with just a minute and forty seconds left in the game. The last touchdown of the night was not enough, and the West fell short of the victory.

The game featured four players from Guilford County, including Central’s Mack, Christian Cokely from Dudley, and two Page players, Mac Hild and Chris Moseley. Dudley’s Cokely, who has committed to Fayetteville State, and Page’s Hild, who will be at Lenoir-Rhyne, both said they will be preparing for their freshman season in college for the remainder of the summer.

Eric Hoy of Clayton HS and the East was named Offensive Most Valuable Player. Antwone Harper who played at Jack Britt HS, also of the East was named Defensive Most Valuable Player. These awards were given at midfield to end the night.

  1. Andy, what do we need to get this kid J Mack enrolled in college, I’ll start (screaming voice) A&T he’s available WSSU he’s available ELON he’s unsigned,ok your turn Andy LOL

  2. Jamiel told the people back on Wednesday night that he had something in the works and that he had not played his last football game…Hope it is something with one of the local teams…I’m like you, A&T, WSSU or Elon would be great and if he had to go to say a Greensboro College or a Guilford College in the beginning, so be it…He needs to be on a college football field somewhere this fall and I hope it is not the far away from home JUCO route that he has to take….Say Oklahoma, Texas or California…

With the internet these days, we can track players anywhere they go, but I still like it when they stay closer to the home base/plate…
