High Point led from the first inning and, behind a strong performance by pitcher Matt Stanley, remained in full control to beat the Hope Mills Boosters 4-1 on Monday in the double-elimination American Legion state tournament at Catawba College.

With the win, Post 87 – which staved off elimination by beating Wilson on Sunday after losing to Hope Mills on Saturday – advanced to the final day of the tournament. It will face either Rowan County or Caldwell County today at 1 p.m. at Newman Park.

“Matt showed up on a day we should’ve hit the ball better but didn’t,” HiToms manager Rob Shore said. “We did what we needed to do on the mound and defensively. Matt was outstanding – absolutely outstanding.

“(The Boosters) had 19 hits last night and he held them to seven today and one run. So, that’s impressive. That’s the best I’ve ever seen Matt pitch, and it was a great day to have his best outing.”

Colin Lipke went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI to lead Post 87 (28-9), which totaled 10 hits for the game. Evan Edwards also had two hits, including a solo home run, while Zach McLean crushed an RBI single high off the wall in left field.

  1. I agree with GSObaseball.. Hey is there no coverage on AL States with our local, boys playing? Can care less about over 30 baseball coverage!

  2. Greg Suire and the Hi-Toms sent us a full report on Sunday’s game and not sure why they didn’t send today…

We got the word from Michael Lindsay and the HPE….

We have been tracking Post 87 at several different sites all season long…I think we have done a pretty good job of covering this team this year, considering all that we follow and cover….

  3. I hope the Hi-Toms can pull off two wins tomorrow. They have the talent throughout the lineup to do it.

And after the way they got railroaded out of the tourney last year they deserve it.

  4. Day 5:Tuesday, July 28 .
Game 14: 1:00 High Point (28-9) vs Rowan Co (28-6)
    Game 15: 7:00 (if necessary)
