West Team takes 16-14 lead after day two of Wyndham Cup
East Team rallies, claims 3.5 of final 4 points Wednesday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The West Team led by as many as 5.5 points Wednesday, but the East Team rallied late for the second day in a row and cut the West’s lead to 16-14 heading into Thursday’s 20 singles matches at Old Town Club.

The West Team stormed out of the gate during the morning foursome matches, as it went 4-0-3 in the first seven matches. The tone was set by a 5-and-4 victory from Philip Barbaree, the reigning U.S. Junior Amateur champion, and Sam Burns, the reigning Rolex Junior Player of the Year.
Haley Moore and Kathleen Scavo also contributed a full point during the morning session, and the win is part of blemish-free weeks for both players. Moore also won in the afternoon and is 3-0-0 to this point, while Scavo is 2-0-1. The last four matches were split two apiece, and the West took a 14.5-10.5 lead heading into the afternoon mixed four-ball session.

The afternoon treated the East well Tuesday, and it did again Wednesday. After dropping the first afternoon match, the East Team posted the next three points with three victories, in which the par-5 17th played a crucial role.

Eagles on No. 17 by Baily Tardy and Lauren Stephenson led to wins, while Braden Thornberry and Jillian Hollis earned a conceded eagle en route to a 2-and-1 victory. These three points made the score 15.5-13.5 with one match remaining.

On No. 18, the East’s Carl Yuan and Sierra Brooks were facing a 1-down deficit to the West’s Brad Dalke and Hannah O’Sullivan. After the West Team both missed their birdie attempts, Yuan drained a 20-foot birdie putt to earn a half-point, make the score 16-14, and give the East some momentum despite its two-point deficit.

“It was the exact same spot I putted from in the morning. I missed it and lost the match in the morning, and on the fairway I said to my caddie, ‘No, I’m not missing this again,’” Yuan said.
Yuan’s putt set off an East Team celebration on the 18th green for the second straight day, and it set the scene for Thursday’s conclusion.

“I don’t think I’ll ever forget that in my entire life,” Yuan said. “I was glad all my teammates support me, and I really respect the West Team and enjoyed the match today.”
Tee times for Thursday’s 20 singles matches will run from 7:30 – 10:40 a.m. off the No. 1 tee at Old Town Club. For more information about Wyndham Cup, please contact Chris Richards (crichards@ajga.org), or visit ajga.org.
